I started out having problems with Updates from Microsoft.  The recent update would not install into my system, it kepted  showing the shieldand told me updates were ready to install. I would then try to do so but nothing happen.  Then when I informed MircoSoft about it they had me uninstall a service pack and then install the new update.  That resolved the update problem.  Then this problem came up.  Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product PhotGallery. The windows installer cannot continue.  I've tried to find the installation package PhotoGallery.msi but can't.  Somewhere when uninstalling and reinstalling the service package I lost this.  Its not on my disk for Windows Xp so where do I get it?

    The Nasty Error 1706 Fix

    C:\Users\owner\AppData\Local\Temp{CCED542C-E05A-4B4A-90C5-B917AA2F3C6B}\

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for this product Search Settings 1.2 The windows installer cannot continue.

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable

    Search Settings.msi     Installation Package [*.msi]

Too all that still needs a fix for this nasty problem I believe I have found the answer.

Delete all of your printer software programs that you have uninstalled. This is a complicated thing for some like myself. But since doing the following I have not received the Error 1706 or for some who have gone deeper in registry 11706.

Click on Start, Click on All programs, Click on Accessories, Click on Run, Type in mscofig then push enter.

Next Click on Tools and scroll down to Registry Editor and click it. Next just below that you will see Launch Click that. You will then see 5 HKEY registry editors lines Click on the + for HKEY_USERS.

Scroll down to Printers and start deleting all except the printer you are using now unless you have tried to remove any of it. If you have then delete all of it as well. After you have deleted all close all. You may be ask to reboot your computer go ahead and do it don’t worry if this does not happen just continue with the final phase of this maddening menace. Finally open your control panel and open printers. Remove everything but the ADD PRINTER  you are finally done. Close all windows and reboot your computer the nasty problem should be gone forever unless you add and delete a printer again then you know what you have to do again.

I have tried the JJ_Russell suggestion.

I downloaded and installed photogallery from Windows Live.

I rebooted and MS Installer was still attempting to install photogallery and asking me to insert a DVD.  I attempted to point the installer at the program file of photgallery without success.

Micosoft.NET Framework then told me I had an unhandled exception which it did not allow me to cancel.

    I am no further forward

    Hi All,

I believe this is a copmponent of a HP printer software. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling your printer drivers and software. Alternatively you kmay want to try inserting your original driver CD when it prompts for the installation package.

I hope this may be useful to you.

    Hi,

You receive the message: Error 1706.No valid source could be found for product xxxx

You therefore need to provide the system with the original installation files for the product xxxx, in this case photogallery.

Do you have windows live installed?, if so this may be for you:

    http://download.live.com/photogallery

Try reinstalling from the download link, then reboot.

Others needing a fix for this should confirm exactly what product is reported in the error, and either redownload the software or provide the relevant CD/DVD.

Same problem for me, but mine references Turbo Tax 2006, long gone and forgotten. Now I can't even shut down the PC which is prepared to do system updates on shutdown. Looking forward to a solution.
