Save files to second hard drive on the computer

Hi Ryan Saitta,

You can create folders on the second hard drive (E drive), add the folders to the libraries like documents, music, pictures and videos and thus save files to them making it a default location.

Also you can change the location of the folders my pictures, my music, etc. Follow the below steps and check-

a. Go to the location C:\Users\ (user name).

b. Now right click the folder whose location you want to change like my pictures, my music, etc.

c. Now click on the location tab and change the location under the heading “you can change where files in this folder are stored to another place on this hard drive, another driver or another computer on the network”.

d. Now click Apply and Ok.

Actually libraries (like pictures library) are where you go to manage your documents, music, pictures, and other files. You can browse your files the same way you would in a folder or you can view your files arranged by properties like date, type, and author.

In some ways, a library is similar to a folder. For example, when you open a library, you'll see one or more files. However, unlike a folder, a library gathers files that are stored in several locations. This is a subtle, but important, difference.Libraries don't actually store your items. They monitor folders that contain your items, and let you access and arrange the items in different ways. For instance, if you have document files in folders on your hard disk and on an external drive, you can access all of your document files at once using the Document library.

It sounds to me like what you actually did is created a Shortcut on the E: drive to the file on the C: drive (did the one on the E: drive have that little arrow on the icon?). This doesn't copy the actual file, it creates a file, called a Shortcut, that links to the original file. I don't know why it might have created a Shortcut, so I might try that again and see if it actually moves it this time. If it still doesn't work, you could also try using Cut & Paste to move the files.

To install or save files directly to the E: drive, just make sure you specify the full path (including the E:). In other words, make sure you say E:\myfiles\mymusic.mp3 instead of just \myfiles\mymusic.mp3. Hopefully this helps.

So, I apologize if this is a stupid question, but I am not that computer savy. I put together a computer with a friend and he suggested that I get a 30GB Kingston HD and then an additional 1TB SATA II Data HD. So, today is my first day using 2 hard drives as well as windows 7 and I do not know how to save things to my 2nd HD which is my E Drive. My C Drive is almost already full and literally no space has been used on my E Drive.  I noticed this and tried to drag my music files and pictures into my E Drive, but it just made copies and no space was freed on my C Drive.  Now I had these files on both drives so I deleted it from my C Drive (from the folder AND from the C/Users/Me/ folder too) hoping this would free up the space on C, but once I did that, the files were lost from my E Drive too. I hope this makes sense. How can I download pictures/music/files or install software/games/etc to my computer and have it directly go to and be saved on my 2nd HD and not the first, smaller one? Thank you
