I upgraded my computer to AMD Phenom II X4 955 processor and installed W7 Pro as a second OS on the separate HD.

When I boot I get W7 boot menu and when I chose "...older Windows..." I get the WindowsXP boot menu:

;

;Warning: Boot.ini is used on Windows XP and earlier operating systems.

;Warning: Use BCDEDIT.exe to modify Windows Vista boot options.

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\XP

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\XP="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /FASTDETECT /NOEXECUTE=OPTOUT

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\XP="Microsoft WinXP Uniprocessor (on Volume 1)" /KERNEL=NTKRNLUP.EXE /HAL=HALACPI.DLL

Which should I choose and why? Please help me not to do something very stupid, thank you!

    Thank You Jaycee

    I did almost exactly as it is explained in the link you gave me. And it works great. I didn't do the last operation with Boot Manager but it's not necessary to do it.

    My problem is different. I changed from one core microprocessor to four core microprocessor at the same time as I reinstalled Windows XP after I installed Windows7.

    So now, when I boot, I get first the boot menu from Windows7 where I can choose Windows7 or WindowsXP.

    When I choose Windows XP I get new boot menu from Windows XP and there I have menu choices.

    I take the first one always, which is: Microsoft Windows XP Professional because I do not understand what those others mean. And that is my question: What they mean and which is best to use?

    1. Microsoft WinXP Uniprocessor (on Volume 1)/KERNEL=NTKRNLUP.EXE /HAL=HALACPI.DLL
    2. Microsoft WinXP Multiprocessor (on Volume 1)/KERNEL=NTKRNLMP.EXE /HAL=HALMACPI.DLL
    3. Microsoft WinXP Legacy PC (on Volume 1)" /KERNEL=NTKRNLUP.EXE /HAL=HALSTD.DLL
    4. Microsoft WinXP Old kernel & HAL (on Volume 1)" /KERNEL=NTKRNOLD.EXE /HAL=HALOLD.DLL
    5. Microsoft WinXP Uniprocessor (on Volume 1)" /KERNEL=NTKRNLUP.EXE /HAL=HALACPI.DLL
    6. Microsoft WinXP Multiprocessor (on Volume 1)" /KERNEL=NTKRNLMP.EXE /HAL=HALMACPI.DLL
    7. Microsoft WinXP Legacy PC (on Volume 1)" /KERNEL=NTKRNLUP.EXE /HAL=HALSTD.DLL

    and so on...

    I can continue choose first and everything is OK, but I am very curios if I can use my computer better if I choose one of Multiprocessor possibility,  and which so?

    Please help me understand this.

    I want have the option to switch between those two, and I have it. It works well but I do not understand those different options to start Windows XP with. I would like choose one of them, whichever is best for me and edit out the rest.

    Hi Piko71,

    Do you want Windows 7 Professional Edition as your Default Operating System? Or you would like to retain the option to switch between 2 Operating Systems?
