Blu-Ray Discs are not recognised any longer in Windows 7

Hi,

I have 2 laptops with internal blu-rays, both of which have stopped recognising Blu-Ray discs. I live in the UK

One Blu-Ray drive is an Optiarc, the other a LG - the PC with the Optiarc has Win 7 64bit Ultimate and the brand new PC with the LG drive has Win 7 64bit Home Premium. Both drives are listed in the compatibility list - and were supplied preloaded with Win7.

They have both played the Blu-Ray discs in the past, but no longer even recognise them in the drive.

I have run the CD/DVD Player Diagnostics suggested in other similar threads, but as the drive doesn't recognise the discs it cannot solve the problem.

I have uninstalled and reinstalled the drives several times in Device Manager.

I have also tried the fix that involved deleting upper and lower filter from a registry key, also without success.

I tried changing AHCPI to AHT in my bios - my bios has no AHT, just AHCPI and IDE

I have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled several different Blu-Ray software including Acer Arcade, PowerDVD, TMT Total MediaTheatre, Slysoft AnyDVD HD and others. None works any longer.

I have even restored both machines to factory default and reloaded manufacturer drivers - no luck.

The manufacturer, Acer, has even replaced one of the machines - when it arrived, it played all my blu-ray discs. After a couple of windows updates, it won't even recognise the discs.

As you might imagine, I'm at a loss as to how to fix it.

I noticed that the driver that is installed when the hardware is found is a Microsoft driver from 1996 - would that work with Blu Rays? Neither drive manufacturer provides a different driver, and driver update says it's the correct driver.

The compatibility list says the Blu-Ray drives should work with the default installed drivers

I am pretty competent with PC Hardware, having fixed computers for 21 years, but this issue has me - and many thousands like me on the web - absolutely stumped. It appears to affect any Blu Ray player with Win 7 installed.

Please can you help

Thanks in advance,

Rob

    Hi,

Be sure to contact the Drives' makers since this would be a known issue if it happens regularly

with Windows 7. Also stay in touch with Acer for the same reasons - consider asking ALL of those

    for firmware updates.

Is it possible you are installing the same software on both computer such as antivirus/antispyware/

security programs or even CD/DVD players and burn programs, and/or others that might be causing

    the problem?

If you are sure it is an update you can try removing the update or even re-install Windows 7 and

block the installation of updates so you can allow them one at a time.

If you get it working make a Restore Point immediately and also make one before you install any

programs (before each major one) and before you add updates.

You have done most of these however here is my usual troubleshooter just in case.

The DVD drive does not function after you install Windows 7 - these are different Sony drives

however the same issue could be affecting your drive.

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/975270/

Do these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

Start - type in Search box -  COMMAND   find at top of list -  RIGHT CLICK  -  RUN AS ADMIN

    Then run checkdisk (chkdsk).

    ==========================================================

    After the above :

References to Vista also apply to Windows 7.

Stage 1 : Please do all the below even if you have done some before as it is often the total

    process which solves the issue.

    Try this - Control Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click the device - Driver's Tab -

click Update Drivers (this will likely do nothing) - then RIGHT CLICK the drive - UNINSTALL -

REBOOT this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if drive is not shown continuebelow.

Then work your way through these - remember the drive could be bad, could have a loose

cable or slight corrosion on the contacts (usually for a laptop) and other issues.

Another possibility is that the cables are loose. Remove ALL power, then check cables in both

ends. Remove and replace, do not just snug. For laptops you can often clean the power and

data contacts with a pencil eraser.

Some DVD drives do not use the Windows default drivers so check with the System maker and

device maker to see if there is firmware or drivers for you drive if needed.

    ===============================

Stage 2 : You could have drive issues as the CD/DVD is actually 4 drives in 1 case ( CD & DVD

burn and CD and DVD read). So it is not unusual for 1 or 2 parts to not function while the others

    do so properly.

Did you complete the troubleshooter for the drive that still does not work? There are some

registry entries that the troubleshooter does not fix and those "might" be the cause.

Check with your System Maker and Device maker for both possible firmware updates and the

correct Registry entries for your drive.

These are the keys I think are the ones in question - for the CD/DVD drive sub-keys of course

as there will other sub-keys in these keys. Be sure to ask for specific keys involved as well as

    the settings.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Hardware Profiles\0001\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\IDE

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

You probably can find more info here and maybe even the exact registry settings for your

CD/DVD drive from someone with the same model.

Use DevManView to locate CD/DVD in registry (be careful and make a Restore Point before

changing anything) - find the device in DevManView and then Right Click on it Open in RegEdit.

DevManView - Free - an alternative to the standard Device Manager of Windows, which displays

all devices and their properties in flat table, instead of tree viewer

    Hope this helps.

I have actually given up on my Pioneer Blu-ray burner (internal) none of my software apps. recognized it. This is Windows 7.

I have purchased an external Samsung Blu-ray burner/player and is functioning fine.

This problem has given me headaches for years but now things seems to be running smoothly.

I use DVDFab8 software and these people appear to know what they are doing with frequent updates.

    Hope this helps.
