Have tried stopping and re-starting Wordpad.  Have tried re-positioning text, back-spacing.

Are you sure it is WordPAD and not Word 2007 or Word 2003? Because I have tried everything I can think of in WordPad to make it double-space automatically (I assume you mean the spacing between the lines, not between letters or words), and I can't do it. I don't think WordPad offers that feature.

    Open WordPad

    Press and hold  Ctrl button

    Press number 1 key

    Release Ctrl button

Somewhere along the line you must've held down the Ctrl key instead of the Shift key for an explation mark.

AWESOME ROB IT FIXED the extra line spacing! But It did not work at first, so I tried going to the end of a sentence or line, then hit delete key bringing the next sentence or line there, then hit SHIFT + ENTER Keys and it then eliminated the extra line spacing! Yer the Man! Maybe this is what the rest need to know.

    Hi joawaters

To over come this infuriating glitch temporarily, hold down the shift key then press carriage return. The resulting line gap will then be normal. But I'm still looking for a way to switch this annoying pest OFF. Grrrr!

By the way, isn't it annoying that, whenever you ask a question about WORDPAD, knowledgeable types almost always ask "don't you mean WORD". Its as if those of us who find the simplicity and lack of intrusive assumptions in Word compared to bossy Wordpad are second class ignorant idiots ! NO, Ducky - when I say WORDPAD I DON'T mean WORD !

    Best regards,  Rob

I don't know who YOU are either, but. . .

Tried that, didn't work. The problem happens when I copy text from another source, particularly (for example) an e-mail which I've received in GMail via Thunderbird. I like to copy important e-mails to a WordPad (NO, NOT WORD !) document which I save on my PC. In the copied text in my WordPad file, the carriage return key then gives wider-than-standard line spacing. WHY ? When I create a new WordPad document and type into it, the carriage return key behaves normally. I use WordPad a lot, I hate the complications in Word, and its frequent assumptions that it knows what I want to do better than I do . I've no doubt that it's wonderful for advanced business users, but I just want a simple typing tool like WordPad. If only the damn' thing would just WORK PROPERLY !!!   GRRRRR!

Rob (so now U no hoo I am !)
