You may run the troubleshooter from the below mentioned link and check if you can get to the exact issue –
Open the Recording Audio troubleshooter –

Use the steps below and verify that the default sound device is set correctly -
- Open Sound by clicking theStart button, and then clickingControl Panel. In the search box, typesound, and then clickSound.
- Click theRecording tab, click Microphone, and then clickProperties.
- Click theLevels tab and make sure the Mute button is on, if off click it to turn on sound for this connection, and then clickApply.
- To listen to microphone sounds through your speakers or headphones, click theListen tab; click the Listen to this device check box.
- Also click theadvanced tab, click to clear the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device check box, and then clickOK.
