epson perfection 1660 photo driver doesn't scan

When the original driver on the installation CD didn't work, I went to the epson.com site, but it appears their only driver for windows 7 is 32-bit.  I'm running a 64-bit OS.  Tried to use the 32-bit version, but same issue. The scanner menu can open, but when I click Scan to File:

! Unable to access the scanner because it is not ready or another application is using it.  Please make sure that the scanner is on and connected to your computer, or close all scanning applications.  Scanner is on and connected.  Rebooting computer did not resolve.

Tried the MS Devices and Printers troubleshooter.  It displays "Epson Scanner doesn't have a driver."

Thanks for investigating.

If Epsom have a 64bit Vista driver try that, if not probably time for a new device
