Maxtor One Touch 4 External Hard Drive not recognized by Windows 7 64 bit

It's not showing up in device manager, or disk management.

I've tried all 8 USB ports on my computer.

I've plugged it into different outlets (the light always comes on), and tested it on other computers running Vista 32bit and XP.

The drive works fine on the other computers but not my new computer which runs Windows 7 64bit.   Microsoft's compatibility checker indicated that this drive should work with Windows 7 64bit.

I'd love to get this drive working.  Any ideas?

    Hi Jingo Netties,

Check if the external hard drive is detected in the BIOS.

While I was looking at the Seagate website I came across that One Touch 4 is only designed to work with only 32-bit Operating Systems and that may be the reason for computer to not detect it.

You may also run the Sea tools available in the below link and check.

    Hi Jingo Netties,

    1.    Are you able to use other USB devices on the computer?

    Method 1

Try the below steps and check if that works.

    a)   Plug in and turn on the external USB hard drive

    b)   Right mouse click on My Computer

    c)    Left click on Manage

    d)   Left click on Device Manager

    e)   Expand the USB list

    f)    Find the USB device for your USB Hard Drive (in my case it was the one that had no description)

    g)   Right mouse click - Uninstall

    h)   Turn off the external USB hard drive

    i)     Turn on the external USB hard drive and let it find and install the driver

    j)    It should work

If the drivers are not installed automatically install use the software disk that came along with the hard drive and install the drivers and software

    Method 2

Refer the below link and run the external hard drive troubleshooter from the Seagate website.

    http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=213055&NewLang=en

If none of the USB device work on the computer then you will need to install chipset drivers on the computer by contacting the computer manufacturer and check.

    Hope this helps!

My problem is a slightly different variation.  I do have Win 7 64 bit.  It used to work fine with Firewire.  Now the computer makes the bonk sound when I hook it up with Firewire but it does not see the drive at all.  However if I switch to the mini-USB port using the cable from my movie camera it works fine

This issue with Win 7 and external hard drives working then stopping is an on-going issue deepseated within Win 7. I had one that worked until 2 weeks ago it was used for a backup - now its not seen and can't be configured selected turned on line or offline as it just not seen by the system. Plug other drives into the docking station same result. Not sure what the solution is - its called an operating system because thats what its supposed to do - operate!!. I suspect a recent automatic update to be the issue, however its been a major issue since the release of Win7 Beta.

Method 1. didn't work.  Neither did Method 2.  I reinstalled the chipset drivers and still nothing.

My main problem is that the hard drive is not being recognized by the computer at all.  By that I mean not only is it not showing up as a Maxtor One Touch 4 drive, but no new device of any kind appears in device manager or disk management when I plug in the drive.  Please Help!
