Computer connects to wireless network as "local only."

I am running Vista Home Premium SP2 on an HP Pavilion laptop.  I have never had trouble connecting this machine to a wireless network before, in hotels, at home, or anywhere.  My current home network is a cable modem -> wire -> netgear n300 wireless router.  My laptop connects to the internet via the cable modem directly, and via a wire from the the netgear router.  I have a second, near identical laptop (it is intel while the one that does not work is AMD) that connects to the wireless network with no problem.  Two iphones connected wirelessely with no issues.  My HP laptop is the only one that refuses to conect to the internet.  It connected to the wireless network but has "local only" access.

I have tried the solution in this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928233

The issue does not seem to be receiving an ip address, the computer gets an ip address.  I have disabled IP v6, ran the norton removal tool because I did have that at one point, and tried all of the other suggestions in these threads: http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/0949042d-074e-43ab-ba95-3c06cc2aa6be  and  http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/bc08f0e7-49a9-4458-9e0e-149b2df362ec.  I have uninstalled ansd reinstalled the adapter and all TCP/IP and network protocols associated with it.  I am at a loss and would appreciate any ideas.

If anyone else has this problem it was solved by rolling the security settings on the router back to WEP.  I got the answer from netgear customer support.

Amazing how two iphones, another laptop with XP and a laptop running Ubuntu Linux all connected with no issues, but the Vista laptop would not connect.

I have uninstalled every program I have that I don't use any more, uninstalled Microsoft Security Essentials, and tried connecting - it still connects "local only."

Again - I think this is a problem with Vista on this laptop since my two iphones and other Vista laptop connected seamlessly.

    Does nobody have an idea?

I am running Microsoft security essentials and I have not made any recent changes.    The drivers have been updated - and I have already tried all of the links in method three.

If you suggest, i will disable Microsoft Security Essentials and give it a go.

    Hi gailwynand,

    1. Do you have any security software installed on the computer?

    2. Have you made any recent changes on the computer?

    Method 1

Disable the security software on the computer and check if it works.

Important: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do have to temporarily disable it to install other software, you should re-enable it as soon as you're done. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.

    Method 2

You will need to update the wireless network adapter driver by visiting the card manufacturer website download and install the latest driver update for the card and check.

    Method 3

Refer the below link to one of the thread with similar issue and possible fixhttp://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistanetworking/thread/ddbfa22d-7b8c-4d4c-ab16-db68f023f021
