Canon EOS Rebel XT is not getting recognized in Windows 7.

Original Title: Still cannot download my Canon EOS Rebel XT in Windows 7

OK, my brand new laptop with Windows 7 did not recognize my somewhat elderly Canon Rebel XT.  So I went to Canon and found no assistance.  Came here and followed this advice -- after determining the menu referenced was the Canon camera's menu:

change the setting in menu > the last icon > communication > change from PC to print/ptp and you will be able to communicate again with the camera

However, I made the mistake of clicking on using EOS Utility to download -- and it does not recognize the camera.  Every time I connect the camera, the Utility tells me the camera is not recognized.

Please -- for the uninitiated, needs one step at a time, casual 70-yr-old user, tell me step by step how to get my precious great-grandbaby's photos on my new PC??

    Hi Blick,

There is no Windows 7 driver available for Canon EOS Rebel XT. However, there is Windows Vista driver available on the Cannon Support websites. Try downloading it and installing the same in Windows Vista compatibility mode and check if it helps.

Make older programs run in this version of Windows

****Hope this helps. Let us know if you need further assistance.

No luck either, but a workaround -

I have a Canon MP 620 Printer that supports CF cards (which is the storage format for my old Canon EOS Digital Rebel).  I popped out the CF card from my camera, popped it into the CF card reader, and then fired up the Canon Solution Menu (Printer software) and hey presto, I was able to browse the CF card filesystem on the printer, and transfer my .jpg images from the CF card over the network to my Windows 7 filesystem.

So, no direct solution, but all I really want to do is get my hands on the images.  My Canon Rebel lives!

I downloaded the Vista file only to get "damaged file" error.   Any suggestions?
