Windows Media Player displays a black screen when a DVD is played. Windows Media Center no longer plays my recorded TV shows, DVDs or Blu-Ray Discs. Audio but no picture.

Hello,

I have been having some trouble in the last week with my computer reading DVDs and Blu Ray Discs.  I have searched quite a few forums, but still no joy on fixing this.

I run Windows 7 on my Desktop PC.

My computer used to play Blu Ray Discs and DVDs and Recorded TV shows in PowerDVD, WMP and Windows Media Center.

Last week that all stopped.  I can only play DVDs and Recorded TV shows (previously recorded in Windows Media Center on POWERDVD 9 Ultimate and not in windows porgrammes.  Blu Ray playback in PowerDVD gives me a Green Screen with audio only.  If I move my mouse over the green screen I can tell that it is at the DVD Main Title screen where I would select Play but If I do I just get Audio and no picture.

I have the latest ATI Radeon HD 8200 drivers and Realtek audiodrivers installed.

1 - I went back to the system install disk and went back to Windows Vista

2 - Dvds play in WMP when No ATI Graphics card driver is installed.  When I then install the latest graphics driver WMP does not play Dvds but PowerDVD does.

3 - I then upgraded to Windows 7

4 -Reinstalled PowerDvd Software and ATI drivers

5 - I can play Dvds and most of the videos on my HDD in POWERDVD but not Blu Ray. (Green Screen Appears - sound but no picture).

6 - WMP and Windows Media Center do not play HDD videos or Blu-Ray Dvds.

I have no idea why going back to the beginning WMP and Windows Media Center no longer play Dvds, I though that a complete re-install would have recified this issue.

I have a seperate DVD-RW drive and Blu Ray Drive.  Under "Windows Computer"  The DVD drive is displayed but the DVD film title is no longer dispalyed under D:/

Any assistance with this problem would be greatfully received.

    Hello,

FINALLY SORTED IT ALL OUT.  GREAT.

I have found the solution to my video playback problems

    1 - I downloaded DECCHECKSetup http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=de1491ac-0ab6-4990-943d-627e6ade9fcb&displaylang=en

I am running Windows 7 64x and WMP 12 -  this XP version worked fine for me.

    2 - Installed it

3 - Ran the scan (Rigth Click and run as Administrator)

4 - Hey Presto - It showed that the Microsoft DTV-DVD Video was not MP10 Compatible. But 2 of the Cyberlink PowerDVD Decoder version were.

5 - I set my prefered decoder to (CYBERLINK VIDEO/SP DECODER POWERDVD 9)

    6 - Tried my Blu-Ray Disc in PowerDVD9 - IT WORKED

7 - Tried my Recorded TV Files in Windows Media Center - IT WORKED

8 - After weeks of trial and error and endless restoring of my computer I am glad to say that his is now sorted.

I hope that this helps you with your video problems.

I also found that using an OLD ATI Graphics Driver worked well for me.  Using the latest onecontinually seems to cause the above problems but using an older one works fine for blu ray and all other media formats.  Ift will probably be trial and error as to which older version of the driver you need.  AMD even say that if an older driver works you do not necessarily need to upgrade as this can cause problems.

    Regards,

    Bluetrumpetmusic

    Hello,

Thank You for your very detailed response.

    I have tried Step 1

No trouble with my Video or Sound cards were detected and they are compatible with windows 7 64-bit

    I have tried Step 2

I received an Email from PowerDVD suggesting that I use a cleaning device to clear my old registry and then reinstall anotther copy of PowerDVD

    a - I used CCleaner.

    b - Reinstalled PowerDVD

c- I can now play normal DVDs and Windows Media files (ones recorded in Windows Media Center) in PowerDVD

d- If I try to play a Blu-Ray disc in PowerDVD I get a green screen with audio.

c- If I try to play a DVD in Windows Media Player or DVD/Blu-Ray/Recorded TV file in Windows Media Center I get a black screen with audio.

    INTERESTING PART:

When I play a DVD or Windows Media file in PowerDVD.  The ENABLE ACCELERATION button in PowerDVD Setup is automatically disabled. When I enabled it the screens went green/black and only the audio was heard.  I know now that for DVDs and Windows Media Files I need to have the ACCELERATION button disabled in PowerDVD.  This does not help with WMP or Media Center Playback.

With Blu-Ray Disks played in PowerDVD the ACCELERATION button is automatically enabled and will not turn off. (Greyed out).  I think that this may be the trouble.

    I have tried Step 3

These are my currently installed Codecs.

    I have tried Step 4

A month or two ago.  Blu-Ray and recorded TV shows worked fine on both PowerDVD and Windows Media Center along with DVDs.

I can only assume that the video and audio devices are working properly with Windows 7.

Any further assistance would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Hi bluetrumpetmusic,

You have tried most of the steps. I would suggest you to try the steps below and check if it helps.

    Step 1:

Run the Windows Media Player DVD troubleshooter and also hardware and devices troubleshooter and check if it helps.

Open the Windows Media Player DVD troubleshooter

Open the Hardware and Devices troubleshooter

    Step 2:

Try reducing (or turning off) video hardware acceleration by doing the following.

    1. Open Screen Resolution by clicking the Start button Picture of the Start button, clicking Control Panel, and then, under Appearance and Personalization, clicking Adjust screen resolution.
    2. Click Advanced Settings, click the Troubleshoot tab, and then click Change settings.

***Note:***that some video card drivers do not permit you to change settings.

    1. Move the Hardware acceleration slider toward None to reduce or turn off video hardware acceleration.
