Why do the keyboard arrow keys shortcuts only work when the seek bar has the focus in Windows Media Player 12?

In Windows Media Player 11, and I believe earlier versions, I could hit the left and right arrow keys on the keyboard while a video was playing to jump forward or backward in the video. I could do this while a video was playing in a window or in full screen, thus allowing my to use just my keyboard to quickly jump forward and backward in a video. Now in WMP 12, this only works when the seek bar has the focus. This means that while playing a video in full screen I must move the mouse to get the seek bar to appear, move the mouse down to the seek bar, and then click it. After doing this then the arrow keys will work. This defeats the purpose of having the keyboard short cut in the first place. Can you please make the left, right, , ctrl + left, ctrl + right, ctrl + shift

  • left, and ctrl + shift + right keyboard shortcut work in WMP 12 the same as they did in 11? This was a simple feature in WMP 11 that did not need to be made so complicated in WMP 12.

    This is an unbelievable bug.

You do have to wonder how they test, it is someones job to go through all these use-cases and sign off the application as working. It doesn't.

There is a key for Play Fast (CTRL SHIFT + G) which WORKS under any circumstancebut (CTRL +) Right Arrow doesn't work.

It is as clear a bug as you could find and yet there is not even a response from MS.

Best solution is install VLC Media Player, this hasn't been fixed in 7 years so I guess they aren't ever going to.

I find it really interesting that Mary-Support Engineer took the time to edit your post for language, but never bothered to reply.

I guess maybe that is not her job?

Come to think of it not many others from MS chimed in either. and Jason H's post is missing altogether. (Maybe it wont look quite so bad that way?)

As you guys mentioned, this is a very frustrating change. I'm going to try and downgrade to WMP11, I really used this feature extensively and the new change makes seeking keyboard shortcuts useless.

    Hi Cthombs,

    Welcome to Microsoft answers.

The keyboard shortcuts work for other windows applications apart from Windows Media Player, if you have opened multiple programs at a time and when the cursor is focused on the other application the arrow keys will work for only that application. The arrow keys work for the programs which are focused on.
