Windows XP SP3 not recognizing USB ports

I recently had my hard drive formatted and XP SP3 installed. I am unable to get my Sony Mavica FD200 camera recognized by USB, and my printer is recognized only sporadically. I have installed a driver for the FD200 and restarted but still no recognition of camera. I noticed that my usbport.sys file is not in the registry but am unsure whether this has anything to do with anything, and am tired of spinning my wheels trying to figure out what is wrong on my own. I have all the latest updates for Windows XP installed. Please advise as I need items from this camera for a presentation at work.

    Try this:

Make sure that your Plug-and-Play Service is working and is running Automatically.

    START >RUN > type services.msc

Once that is determined as Running | AUTOMATIC

Go to MyComputer > Right-Click PROPERTIES> Device Manager > scroll down to bottom where it says UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS CONTROLLER.

Right-Click 2 or 3 (depending on how many USB ports your computer has)

USB Root HUB > Uninstall --> CONFIRM DEVICE UNINSTALL [OK]

SHUTDOWN the computer. Wait a minute. RESTART.

If you have SP3 installed, it will automatically find USB2 driver. In rare case you will have to manually re-direct the driver location (as I recently did ~ 4weeks ago)

Have you gone to the Latitude D610 support site ,

downloaded and installed the Dell Latitude D610

laptop drivers, utilities and firmware updates?

In particular, have you installed the Dell Notebook

    System Software?

There is a note on the Dell Driver and Support site that

    says:

    (quote)

    Important Information

Notebook System Software is critical for the correct operation of USB devices,

    including the Dell D/Bay, D/Dock, D/Port, and D/View.

The Windows XP Media Center Edition Operating System requires the "English"

version of the Notebook System Software application, no matter which locale

    you may have selected.

    (end quote)

You should determine which of the drivers, firmware, and utilities apply

and install what is appropriate.  Note, during production, Dell feels free

to substitute hardware as it sees fit and you need to determine which

downloads actually apply to your laptop.  Additionally, check for undocumented

substitutions.  I found a Fujitsu hard drive in an Inspiron laptop where Dell never

even listed it as an option and the service tag showed a Samsung was installed.

    Good luck!
