SiS Graphics card driver problems

Anonymous
2010-08-07T10:43:49+00:00

I have a windows xp professional SP3 with a Sis graphics card 651. Games and IE8 started freezing. Had to do hard reboots, noticed the SiS graphics accelerator port driver was at fault. Event log said "The driver SiS.GRV for the Display device\device\video0 got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the device incorrectly." Updated the driver and 4 other SiS drivers- ide, real 256 color, accelerated graphics port, audio. Am holding off on SiS lan driver update. Have tried to get USB1.1/USB2.0 driver update, but haven't located update because its 'provided by o.s.". I do not have the xp disk, 'cause I bought the computer used. The new drivers have corrected the severe freezing.

But the computer occasionally just winks out now. I get my monitor's screen as though windows is gone- it just says ACER (my Monitor brand), then a black screen, then I am right back to where I was. It doesn't reboot, she just winks out, then on. This is not picked up by the event log or by a Norton Diagnostic program. Any thoughts? Do I need the bios update? and where would I get it?

I had done a systen restore, which did not help, prior to going for the driver updates.

I have SiS North Bridge Chipset 651, SiS South Bridge Chipset 962/962L and GPU SiS Real 256 Graphics. and have High Speed internet. Bios is Award Modular BIOS v6.0 Version ASUS-42302e31

Thanks

I was just seeking my Acer monitor info. Opened Display Properties via Control Panel's Display icon. and oddly, when I clicked on the screensaver tab, the little monitor picture said 'could not find any compatible Direct3D devices". Well, it had been working through all of this.

Do I need to reinstall the drivers or is it time to pick up a new graphics card? Perhaps different settings somewhere?

    Thanks

This is misplaced as I just ran the malware programs as indicated below.

    Let's see what you've got:

Please provide additional information about your system:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

    msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information.

This will minimize back and forth Q&A and eliminate guesswork.

For video driver information, expand the Components, click Display, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here.

Here is a method to post the specific information about individual events.

To see the Event Viewer logs, click Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer.

A shortcut to Event Viewer is to click Start, Run and in the box enter:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\eventvwr.msc /s

Click OK to launch the Event Viewer.

The most interesting logs are usually the Application and System.

Some logs such as Security and Internet Explorer may be completely empty or have only a few items.  The default settings for XP is not to log all that activity unless you need to troubleshoot some issue in those areas.  If you enable the logging for them the logs fill up quickly and could negatively effect your system performance with all the extra (usually unnecessary) activity.

If you have Microsoft Office installed, it has its own logs and they may be empty or occasional boring activity or very little activity if there is no problem with your Office applications.  This is normal.

Not every event is a problem, some are informational messages that things are working okay and some are warnings.

No event should defy reasonable explanation.

Each event is sorted by Date and Time.  Errors will have red Xs, Warnings will have yellow !s.

Information messages have white is.  Not every Error or Warning event means there is a serious issue.

Some are excusable at startup time when Windows is booting.  Try to find just the events at the date and time around your problem.

If you double click an event, it will open a Properties windows with more information.  On the right are black up and down arrow buttons to scroll through the open events. The third button that looks like two pages on top of each other is used to copy the event details to your Windows clipboard.

When you find an interesting event that occurred around the time of your issue, click the third button under the up and down arrows to copy the details and then you can paste the details (right click, Paste or CTRL-V) the detail text back here for analysis.  Remove any personal information from your information

after pasting if you are compelled to do so.

If you paste an Event, it will look something like this boring system startup event:

    Event Type:    Information

    Event Source:    Service Control Manager

    Event Category:    None

    Event ID:    7035

    Date:        7/14/2010

    Time:        5:54:18 PM

    User:        Jose

    Computer:    Computer

    Description:

The Remote Access Connection Manager service was successfully sent a start control.

To get a fresh start on any Event Viewer log, you can choose to clear the log (backing up the log is offered), then reproduce your issue, then look at just the events around the time of your issue and troubleshoot the events that are happening when you have your issue.

Please vote my posts as helpful so I can get lots of points. I am saving up for a pony!

I found these in the application events- but nothing around the time the winkouts occurred. I can't reproduce the wink outs because the event logs are not picking them up, and Norton says my system is fine!
