    Hello everyone,

Today I noticed the same error (vds basic provider error code: 490@01010004) on one of our hyper-V guest server (Windows Server 2008 R2). The server has been logging this error 10 or more times a day since 1st of June 2010! I searched the Internet and found this KB:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979391. So acording to Microsoft**"this event can be safely ignored"**!

Whenever I open the Event Log all I see is this error logged thousand times. That's why I don't find ignoring the error a very wise resolution. At least according to Microsoft it do not  indicate any problem.

Hmmmm...    i also have had a vds basic error, mine was after the machine was on for a while.  it was on, shake the mouse to wake the screen style.  when i shook the mouse, i heard a beep as if hardware was unplugged and plugged back in, although very faint.   event viewer indicated vds basic provider, Unexpected failure. Error code: 490@01010004.  my machine is stock hp elite series using 7 home pr, and i ALSO have daemon tools installed w a virtual drive (m in this case).  i dont have roxio or alcohol, but hp could have rebranded their programs based off one of them.  this is my first vds error.   wanted to share what i have with you all, maybe it would help.

Several forums state that the problem is caused by one of the following:

     - Roxio Burning Software

     - Alcohol 120% Software

In my case Disc Management did show two CD/DVD drives although only one drive was installed physically:

     - TSSTcorp DVD+ - RW TS-U633F (this drive is physically installed)

     - UJQTQ 8LN0HIJ SCSI CdRom Device (a virtual device installed by Daemon Tools Lite V4.35)

Everytime after accessing Disk Management for the first time after a reboot Windows will log the VDS error message.

After disabling the UJQTQ.. CdRom Device the problem was solved.

    Hi mikivr ,

Welcome to Microsoft Windows 7 Answers Forum!

How are you trying to access the Disk Management? Is it via Command Prompt or by right click on Computer?

Check If you get any error message in the Safe Mode.

You can also try clean boot troubleshooting if any third party is causing this issue.

Try using these 3 troubleshooting methods.

    METHOD 1

Please check whether you face the same issue while working in the Safe Mode.

    1. Restart your computer.
    2. When the computer starts you will see your computer's hardware being listed. When you see this information start to gently tap the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly until you are presented with the Windows 7 Advanced Boot Options screen.
    3. Using the arrow keys, select the Safe Mode option you want.
    4. Then press the enter key on your keyboard to boot into Windows 7 Safe Mode.
    5. When Windows starts you will be at a typical logon screen. Logon to your computer and Windows 7 will enter Safe mode.
    6. Do whatever tasks you require, and when you are done, reboot to go back into normal mode.

    METHOD 2Clean Boot Troubleshooting.

    1. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

       User Account Control permission.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the

       password, Or click Continue.

    1. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    2. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup items check box.
    3. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    4. Click OK.
    5. When you are prompted, click Restart.
    6. After the computer starts, check whether the problem is resolved.

If the issue is resolved check which third party is causing the problem, referring the link given below:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Also you need to uninstall and reinstall the problem software on your computer.

Reset the computer to start as usual

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.

When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

    METHOD 3

Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue, and then replace the file. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Open an elevated command prompt. To do this, click Start, click All Programs, click Accessories, right-click Command Prompt, and then click Run as administrator. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.

    2. Type the following command, and then press ENTER:

    sfc /scannow

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

More Information about SFC scan can be found in this document:

    Hope this information was helpful.
