No Sound in Windows 7 32-bit (Toshiba Notebook)

Greetings all.

First of all I'd like to say this is a Toshiba Satellite P105-S9337 and this is a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit. Now, on XP this laptop was perfectly fine - everything worked correctly. However, after installing Windows 7 I seem to have encountered a problem with the audio not functioning. The specifics are the BIOS being Toshiba V4.70 1/19/2009 - SMBIOS Version 2.4. The motherboard, from what I can tell, is just called a P105-S9337 Motherboard (shrug).

Now, I've tried almost everything. Before anyone tells me, yes I did run the Troubleshooter and check to see if my audio was enabled, set to default, etc, etc. Windows 7 downloaded and installed its own version of the Conexant High Definition SmartAudio HD2 (4.36.7.60; 4/11/2008). However, that failed - no audio.

I've been to Toshiba's website and downloaded their Conexant Audio Driver for Windows 7 (v4.8.0.0; 09-04-2009). When that failed, I downloaded the Windows Vista versions they released to see if they would work. That also failed me. Then I bumped up a version

  • P105-S9339 - to see if its drivers would work. However, nothing got accomplished.

I checked with programs that would automatically download the necessary drivers but those didn't even detect there was a problem. I can even open up the Playback Menu and it shows "Speakers" and "SPDIF Interface" listed. I'll play a song and it will show volume on the Speakers!

The only time I can hear audio is if I plug in Headphones. I can hear sounds via headphones, but not speakers.

Also one thing I have observed. Whenever I update from Windows 7's automatic drivers to the latest Conexant 4.8 drivers, my playback changes from "Speakers" to "Internal Audio/Headphones". Why would that be?

Please, I've been working on this all day. I just cannot find a solution!

My husband had the same problem after installing Windows 7 on his Toshiba Satellite P105-S9722 which was previously running XP. After a lot of research and frustration we heard of trying theConexant Audio Driver for Windows Vista(v3.18.0.51; 02-02-2007; 2.3M)

I guess they don't have a stable driver for 7 yet but the Vista driver worked instantly. Hope this helped!

I had the same problem with my Toshiba satellite, I lost sound one-day. After doing a search on the Internet for fix that I could not find. I decided I'll try to delete the sound drivers from my satellite PC then I immediately rebooted the computer, hoping Windows 7 would reinstall the drivers, Windows 7 did automatically reinstall the drivers. As soon as I rebooted Windows 7 reinstall the drivers and now the sound works fine again. You can try this for yourself if you lose the sound on your computer, just delete or uninstall the sound drivers and reboot your computer, Windows should install the drivers for you. You should try this at least three times if it doesn't work the first time. Hope this helps!
