DVD RW Drive (E:). Why is my CD inserted showing up a drive instead of installing?

I have a maxtor external hard drive and when I tried to install the CD auto play opens and it wants me to choose to import pictures. This is an installation CD that will not install. If I open my computer  the CD is shown as DVD RW Drive (E:). I have no option to install this. By default all installation programs should ask me and install. I need direction as how to fix this. Microsoft fix it said i did not insert a readable disk when I tried an automated fix. This CD used to work and I lost it when I made a recovery of this computer.

Some one please help.

    Hi Stewfss,

Have you checked with different installation CDs?

The issue could be related to Auto play settings, I would suggest you to try the following steps:

Step 1: Firstly, check with different installation CDs and let me know if it works fine as expected.

Step 2: Change Auto play Settings

Follow these steps to specify what should happen when you insert installation CD into your computer.

    1.   Open AutoPlay by clicking the  Start button, clicking Control Panel, clicking Hardware and Sound, and then clicking AutoPlay.

    2.   Under Media, locate Software and games and select install or run program from your media from the drop down.

    3.   Click Save.

Step 3: Also open the CD by double clicking on the drive and browser through the contents of the CD to check if Auto play file present.

Now check to see if the issue is resolved and let me know

    Thanks and Regards:

    Hi Stewfss,

Check the Maxtor Safety Drill Recovery CD with external hard drive on another computer to eliminate any issues with CD itself.

    Thanks and Regards:

Thank you the answer but, it doesn't help.

My Auto play in default settings is set to insall or run for software and games.

This problem is a Maxtor SafetyDrill  Recovery CD that goes mith my external hard drive that I back my computer up with.

When I put the CD in the computer, autopay opens for DVD RW Drive (F:). I open MY Computer and there is the DVD Drive (F:) SafetyDrill.

I can open the file. Listed is bmr, boot, tool, KNOPPIX, Cdron icon and autorun(shortcut to MS DOS program 967 bytes) with an arrow at bottom of left side of folder.

I have had this CD installed before and my Maxtor hard drive needs it for the backup.

The files on the Maxtor CD say date modified is 5/17/2007. I lost the program when I recovered this computer in April 2010.

How do I change the format of the disk? Why is autorun shortcut to MS-DOS program doing on the CD? I do not want to loose this external hard drive!
