Do I need an OS for my computer to work?

Hello, right now I'm building a computer. What I was wondering is, are you able to run a computer normally without an OS? If I could, would I still be able to do things such as run iTunes, play music, watch videos, play games, and so on? I'm thinking of installing an OS, but it does not support itunes. If I had no OS would I just not be able to do anything, or would it just be a completely plain computer with no extra gadgets?

If you build a car, does it need an engine to run?

yes the computer would "run" but you would only see a blank screen, as it needs instructions from a os.

it would be like a living human without a brain/head.

Without an Operating System, a computer is just a hunk of parts - it's the operating system that tells it what to do, when, and how.

There are many  operating systems to choose from - pick the one that best suits your needs and pocket - Windows is just one of them.

Yes, you need to install an operating system in order for your computer to function properly.  Consider installing Windows 7 Home Premium.
