Run DLL error messages on Windows 7 start up.

I'm getting two error messages on Windows 7 start up:-

  1. There was a problem starting C:\users\xxx\appdata\local\URESUBAS.DLL. The specified module could not be found.
  2. There was a problem starting C:\users\xxx\appdata\local\CTRELI.DLL. The specified module could not be found.

I've run a full system scan with Norton internet security, but the problem is still there. How can I get rid of the error messages?

It sounds as though you’ve had a recent infection and one of your ‘anti’ programs has removed the malware files, or some of them, but not the entry in the registry. I suggest you, firstly, download and run the free Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from http://www.malwarebytes.org/ to ensure that you are completely clean. If you then restart the computer and the messages are still appearing try one of these, but it is prudent to create a system restore point before making changes to the registry:

    1. There are a number of registry keys where the rascals could be hiding, so it’s quicker to search the whole registry. Open a Run window (Windows Logo key+R), type regedit and press Enter. Click Edit > Find and type URESUBAS.DLL, put ticks in Keys, Values and Data, then click Find Next. When it’s found in the right pane, right-click it and delete it. There should be only one entry but press F3 to continue searching, just to confirm there are no more. Repeat the search for CTRELI.DLL.
    2. If you’re concerned about making registry changes, remove the entry using the system configuration utility. Click the Windows Orb (Start), type msconfig and press Enter. Go to the Startup Tab and remove the ticks alongside URESUBAS.DLL and CTRELI.DLL. Click Apply, OK, etc. and restart the computer. When it restarts, put a tick in ‘Don‘t show this again‘ as you‘re effectively doing a selective start up.

THIS IS THE FIX!!!  Thank you GreginMich! I had the same exact error and fixed it with your solution. To quote what you said with a small adjustment for Windows 7:

After pressing the Windows button on the keyboard, in the "search programs and files" box,

    Type “taskschd.msc”

    Press the Enter key

Click on the Task Scheduler Library folder

    Right-click on the BackgroundContainer task

    Select "Delete”

    Thank you GreginMich! :)

Remove Broken References from the Registry

Windows Registry contains references to various files on your computer. The broken startup reference may contribute Run.DLL error at startup.

Download a Registry Cleaner software and perform a full registry scan. Remove the invalid and broken references found in your registry.

    Disable Startup Entry

Deleting the target module without removing the startup entry may cause this error at startup. You have to remove the startup entry manually in order to fix this problem.

    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. Type MsConfig and press ENTER.
    3. Uncheck the dead entry.
    4. Click Apply | OK.
    5. Restart the machine.

    Uninstall Corresponding Program

Uninstall the program that causes RunDLL problem at startup. Do below steps:

    1. Click Start | Control Panel.
    2. Click Programs | Uninstall a Program.
    3. Select the program responsible for RunDLL error.
    4. Click Uninstall button.
    5. Follow the wizard and restart the computer after completion.

    Run Malware Scan

A malware infected to your computer may cause RunDLL problem at startup. You have to scan your system with a good anti-malware program and remove the infections that found.

    Delete Registry Entry

An incorrect startup entry referring to deleted module may cause RunDLL error at startup. You have to find and delete such registry entry.

    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. Type RegEdit and press ENTER.
    3. Remove dead references from the following registry hives:

    a. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    b. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

    c. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run

    d. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

    1. Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.

Hi, Thanks for your advice and for pointing me in the right direction. Having read your reply, I realised my internet security has a tool to clean the registry, so I tried using that, as I didn't fancy tinkering with the registry myself....and it worked a treat, no more problems!

Once again, many thanks for your help.
