Dear Whoever, I had the same problem. One day my audio output/sound card just stopped. Red X on the sound icon. My CD/DVD worked fine but no sound. I uninstalled the sound card, updated the drivers...everything I could find...nothing worked. I run the Vista 32 bit with a Realtek AC'97 integrated sound. Looked in the forums and read and tried for weeks hoping not to have to reformat. Finally, I got in the registry and got lucky. Here's what I did: Device manager: uninstalled all the sound stuff. I kept getting this: Microsoft Kernel DRM Audio Descramber Microsoft Streaming Clock Proxy Microsoft Quality Manager Proxy Microsoft Service Proxy Microsoft Tee/Sink-to-Sink Converter Realteck AC'97 I uninstalled all this stuff. Then went to regedit and see below Regedit Navigate to: HKeyLocalMachine\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class{4D36E96C-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} ON RITE PANE...I deleted: Dword value for LOWER FILTERS (Mine had something in there that read like LVUSB or some such ____) I rebooted and didn't let Windows auto-install....don't let it...it will give you all that ____ mentioned above. I reinstalled my sound from a package from Realtek for Vista. Lo and behold....................sound is back. Vista still hates the driver but did before cuz Vista suks.....but it works as does everything else so...screw it! I'm happy. Hope it works for you. chatilingus

    Hi,

Did you recheck to make sure the driver installed is actually the latest one from Reaktek? As I said

    they can rollback.

Do these to clear corruption and repair/replace damaged/missing system files.

Run DiskCleanup - Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Cleanup

Start - type in Search box -  COMMAND   find at top of list -  RIGHT CLICK  -  RUN AS ADMIN

    sfc /scannow

How to analyze the log file entries that the Microsoft Windows Resource Checker (SFC.exe) program

    generates in Windows Vista cbs.log

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928228

Then run checkdisk - schedule it to run at next start and then Apply OK your way out then restart.

How to Run Check Disk at Startup in Vista

Then re-do the driver update so it re-installs and make sure the latests ends up as it will rollback

so you will have to install - reboot - check - repeat all until it does.

    Hi,

Code 39 means the driver is corrupt or missing.

Control Panel - Device Manager - SOUNDS - look for HD Audio - Mine says RealTek High Definition Audio

(that is an example and yours may have an entirely different name/maker).

Write down description make and model - double click on it - drivers tab - write down version. Now

Click UPdate Drivers which may not do anything as MS is far behind certifying drivers. Then RIGHT

CLICK on it and UNINSTALL - REBOOT - this will rebuild the driver stack.

1st go to system maker's site and look for latest driver Download - SAVE - go to right click on and RUN AS ADMIN

(This is your fallback.) REBOOT after each driver installation.

NOTE : Sound drivers often rollback so check the version after installation and the reboot to seeif the version you installed is there, if not repeat the install - reboot until it is. It can take severaltries depending on how many rollbacks it does.

Then do same for Device Maker's site. (Realtek as you said)

RealTek - click HD Audio Codec Driver on Right side of page

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/

Manually look at manufacturer's sites for drivers - and Device Maker's sites.

    http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/error-the-audio-service-is-not-running-when-opening-the-volume-mixer-in-vista/

Also Right Click Speaker near clock - Playback Devices - right click in the box area - check

Show disable and disconnected devices. Highlight speaker and on the lower Right click Properties

check settings for Device Usage enabled and so on. Also do same for Configure on Lower Left of

    that box.

In Control Panel you can also look for an Audio Manager along with the Sound Settings.
