Windows 7 - Headset Microphone Stopped Working Suddenly

Remember - This is a public forum so never post private information such as email or phone numbers!

About 5 days ago my Logitech USB headset's mic stopped working.  The headphones still play sound but the mic doesn't input any sound.

Things I have done:

-Uninstalled / reinstalled Headset Driver, All USB Drivers, & sound card driver.

-tried headset on another pc (it worked)

-tried a different USB Headset on my machine (output worked / input didn't)

-tried a headset with jack inputs so the sound card. (output worked / input didn't)

-bought a new sound card and used headset with jacks (output worked / input didn't)

-tried every possible configuration of input & output devices in my sound options (nothing worked)

-re-enabled the onboard sound and plugged into that (output worked / input didn't)

1 strange thing is happening.  If I physically smack the mic the pc picks that up which leads me to believe that somewhere the sound is just set really low as opposed to not working at all even though i have turned up ever slider I can find to max volume.  I get no errors.  Nothing has changed with my pc recently.

Hi oscilaltor,

You may run the troubleshooter from the below mentioned link and check if you can get to the exact issue –

Open the Recording Audio troubleshooter –

Use the steps below and verify that the default sound device is set correctly -

  1. Open Sound by clicking theStart button, and then clickingControl Panel. In the search box, typesound, and then clickSound.
  2. Click theRecording tab, click Microphone, and then clickProperties.
  3. Click theLevels tab and make sure the Mute button is on, if off click it to turn on sound for this connection, and then clickApply.
  4. To listen to microphone sounds through your speakers or headphones, click theListen tab; click the Listen to this device check box.
  5. Also click theadvanced tab, click to clear the Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device check box, and then clickOK.

Logitech Tech Support simply said my DSP 500 is no longer supported in the SP1 version of Windows 7.  Logitech doesn't supply drivers, etc except through Microsoft.  Microsoft web site shows incompatible.

But after going through Control Panel/Troubleshooter, it started working for both mic and headset.  Hooray!

    Mary,

I'm having the exact same problem.  I recently wiped and rebuilt all my win xp machines and installed win 7.  I kept all the win 7 drivers that were automatically installed.  All machines are Dell Optiplex 740's.  The headset is a Logitech (no model #) but it is NOT usb, it is analog with the split connectors (headphone(green)/mic(pink)). Not one of them will allow for microphone input, but all can hear thru headphones and speakers.

If I go to control panel\sound\it shows a green check by the microphone.  So I do know the port must be working.  I checked the properties made all adjustments you suggested to the other member.

If I try to setup the mic, nothing registers in the "Peter dictates to his computer...."

Not sure what else to do, but I need to get all 50 of my machines working.

    Help!

I followed your troubleshooting step but it did not work.  Is there any sort of low level switch that can completely kill all incoming sound for all devices?
