Original title: Installing and accessing an XP supported program on W7

My Britannica Ultimate Resourse Suite 2005 software does not support my current W7 OS and Britannica's Technical Support Team confirmed that URS 2005 was indeed not developed with W7 in view and consequently they are not sure how it functions in W7 eenvironment;I went to  the sustem's compatibility feature but it  threw up such a bewildering number and description of options for me to select that I could not proceed with an offered solution; therefore I am not being able to  install the SW program on my W7 laptop

    Hello PULINC,

If you run Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate version, install Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP mode (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/default.aspx) and execute your software in Windows XP.

If you run Windows 7 Home Premium, try VirtualBox (www.virtualbox.org) or VMware Player (www.vmware.com) or any other 3rd party virtualization software and install a separate copy of Windows XP (either Home Edition or Professional) for that purpose. You can find virtualization software free of charge that will run on Windows 7 Home Premium.

     Hope this helps,

    Sincerely,

    Marilyn

    Hi PULINC,

Any program that's not compatible with Windows 7 can be either installed in compatibility mode or in Windows XP Mode.

Try the following steps and check the result.

Step 1: Manually install the program in compatibility mode

    a. Copy and save the software CD contents on the desktop in a new folder.

    b. Right click on the program setup file and click Properties.

    b. Click Compatibility tab.

    c. Under compatibility mode section, check mark "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and select "Windows XP Service Pack 2" from the dropdown list.

    d. Under "Privilege Level" section, check mark "Run this program as an administrator"

    e. Click ok to apply the changes.

    f. Open the file and install it.

See Make older programs run in this version of Windows

Step 2: If you're still not able to install the program, then try installing it in Windows XP Mode

    a. See Install and use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

    b. Install Windows XP Mode, launch it from the Start menu.

    c. Install the program in Windows XP Mode and check if it works fine.

Note: Using Windows XP Mode, you can run programs that were designed for Windows XP on computers running Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate editions only.

If nothing works, then you'll have to upgrade to the software that's compatible with Windows 7.

When I try to install a program in XP mode I get this friendly but troubling pop up "The Windows Installer does not permit installation from a Remote Desktop Connection"  What do I do?  I can't run the program on W7 and I can't install program on XP mode?
