me too. this is what i did. i bought it from bestbuy, new. opened case. plugged in the zune hd 16 into a generic usb car charger. got the battery charge indicator on the screen for a second or 2 then it turned off. on the waay back home i left it charging. i believe it charged but nothing on the screen ever showed up again. the first time i plugged it into the computer (windows 7 ult) it said usb device not recognized so i checked device manager and under "other devices" APX was there. you cant find the apx driver, its not an installable driver. im guessing the mainboard got fried when charing with the car charger. but it does turn on and off because the APX under dev manager appears and disappears when i push the power button. ive tried every single reset option. still nothing. can anyone shed some light on this subject?
Looking for APX drivers?
I've replied on another topic that I am having a problem where my screen has gone black but won't come back.
Well I decided to plug the Zune into my PC again after I rebooted it (the pc, not the zune) and got a message that APX failed to install.
What the heck is this? Did the Zune get completely scrambled? Am I missing a driver or something?
Insight, please? All I can find about APX is that there's an APX chip inside.
For those keeping track at home: Zune HD 32gb unit.

2011-09-25T22:35:23+00:00 Yeah I've long since given up hope of a fix. I attempted to pay for repairs but Microsoft don't even have a method of registering my zune to be repaired from my location in London.
Really not going to bother with Microsoft products beyond Windows itself anymore. Already deactivated my Xbox Live subscription and will never buy another bit of Microsoft hardware.
Essentially I bought a player that would happily work for 7 months then decide to self destruct. I also had the great privilege of having to pay £190 for this great experience. I've had to deal with terrible hardware with the Xbox 360, having to send it in for repairs 3 times in 2 years. You could argue I should have learned from that.
So now I have. I've learned not to give Microsoft any of my cash.
**** disgraceful.

2010-12-03T17:06:02+00:00 My zune will not power up. It froze 40 minutes into my jog, so I tried holding the power button down for several minutes, then holding combinations of power button+side button+front button. It finally turned off, but now when I plug it into any docking station it says "Cannot install driver" and the detail for the error says "APX driver not found".
As a side note, I hate that Google returns several hits in the Zune forums for this error, but the forum search comes up empty. This issue can't be an isolated event. judging by the hits outside the zune forums..

2010-12-01T20:29:21+00:00 My zune has stopped working after I had let it lose charge. Now when attempting to charge it on my PC, I am asked to search for APX drivers. The zune previously worked absolutely fine. Other charging methods (via X360) also haven't yielded any success. Hard reset by holding down the power also changed nothing. Have left it to charge through mains and still nothing.
