How to reset windows vista internet connections

I am sick and tired of getting the runaround on the Microsoft Website. I entered my windows vista key EXACTLY as it appears to me in the system information and the microsoft help area says the product ID does not match, even though a minute before, it matched for the wrong vista home version I selected. And then they want to charge me 50 bucks for support for their broken product? Unfathomable.

Simply, I want to know how to reset my Vista internet connection entirely, short of wiping my hard drive and putting everything back on. Everything windows-based that requires says it cannot find an internet connection. However, firefox has no problem (which is what I am using right now). I tried the command-line prompts to reset winsock and the TCP/IP stack and nothing has worked. And when I try to "diagnose and repair", windows says there is no problem.

    Hi

While it is obvious that you are upset about something, I cannot make head and tail what it is about.

In the first paragraph, you are complaining about what looks like a problem with the product key.

In the second paragraph you want to reset the Internet connection, I do not know what it means to reset Internet connection in the computer, usually rebooting the modem and the Router the connection.

Please post what exactly is not working, and what do you want to achieve.

Product key and activation support is here, http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/vistainstall/threads

    Hi

Winsock and TCP/IP Refresh is done this way.

Type Cmd in the Start Search text box.

Press Ctrl-Shift-Enter keyboard shortcut to run a  Command Prompt as an Administrator.  Allow elevation.

Type netsh winsock reset in the Command Prompt , and then press the Enter key.

Do the same processes for refreshing the TCP/IP just replace the typed command with.

    netsh int reset   press Enter

    ipconfig /flushdns    press Enter

    Restart your Computer.

Check also the Router's support site to see of you are using the latest Firmware, and the computer's support for the latest Network card drivers.

Basically I am trying to figure out how to tell my computer it has an internet connection.

Anytime windows needs an internet connection (windows Vista upgrades, internet explorer browser, etc), my Windows does not "see" my internet connection.

However, I am currently connected to the internet, or else I would not be able to type this. (I am currently using firefox). Online games work, as does my firefox browser. But anything windows-based does not seem to recgonize my internet connection.

I have my computer hard-lined into my router and I have reset my router numerous times.

I read something online about resetting my winsock, if that means anything.
