How to count characters in Notepad?

I need to write an essay in notepad and I also need to make sure I don't go over 5500 characters. How do I count the characters? I can't find a button to do it.

    install notepad++ and then install TEXTFX plugin.

    Open the document whose character needs to be counted in notepad++ , Press CTRL-A to select everything in the document, now click on Plugins-->Text FX-->Tools-->word count this will give character count with spaces and without space and also word count.
