The Snipping tool works fine except when I try to use it in Internet explorer.  The entire screen goes to either black or grey when a snipping tool or "New" is selected.

Hi Stansd,

It seems like something in Internet Explorer is preventing Snipping Tool to do its task.

Were you able to capture screenshots earlier from Internet Explorer using Snipping Tool before this issue occurred?

Firstly, check to see if snipping tool works on other web browsers. Also, try the steps mentioned below to see if that help you in fixing the issue.

Step 1: Run Snipping Tool in Administrator mode

a.    Click on Start; in the Start search type Snipping Tool.

b.    Right click on Snipping Tool and choose to “Run as administrator”.

c.    Open Internet Explorer and then try to capture screen shots.

Step 2: Perform a System File Checker

The System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) scans for missing or corrupted system files and repairs them. Visit the link below to know how to perform system file checker scan on your computer.

Step 4: Test the issue with a new user account

    Hello one more time

I have been in touch with Trusteer Rapport.

There is an option within the programme to prevent interference with screen capture. Once this is interference is switch off the SNIPPING TOOL works as normal.

    Only 4/5 hours wasted looking....

    Hope this all helps!

    Hello again

After an afternoon of searching, testing and eventually uninstalling the few programmes that I have recently installed I eventually reached a state where the Snipping Tool worked again.

The last programme that I uninstalled before the Snipping Tool worked again was

    Trusteer Rapport

This is a security programme that the Santander Bank suggested I install before using their online system.

Maybe I'll have to change my bank!!

The Rapport support site includes this advice for enabling screen capture on sensitive websites i.e. this procedure allows Rapport to remain active.  I've only tried it once.  It seems to work correctly.

Trusteer Rapport inhibits capturing screenshots of its protected sites.  This may be overridden in Rapport Advanced policy settings.  When you browse to a protected website Rapport blocks screen capturing attempts to prevent malware from capturing sensitive information that is presented by your browser. A screen capturing program would show black screens when your browser presents a protected website.

For this reason Remote Desktop software such as LogMeIn, WebEx, VNC, Teamviewer and others will be blocked if Rapport is installed on the Target computer and a protected website is accessed.

If you are trying to capture the screen of a protected website you should first turn off this specific protection mechanism by following these steps:

    1   Open Rapport Console:

2   Click the Rapport icon, located next to the browser's address bar, and then click "Open Console", or

3   Click Start -> All Programs -> Trusteer Rapport -> Rapport Console

4   Change the policy by following these steps:

5   At the bottom of the console there is a green right arrow - click it

    6   Click "Edit Policy"

7   Enter the letters as they are shown in the image and then click OK.

8   Find "Block Screen Capturing " (1st row)

9   Next to "Block Screen Capturing", Click the drop down menu and choose "Never"

    10 Click "Save"

    11 Reboot your computer
