Realtek RTL8187 Wireless Adapter problems...

I am getting the following message about my adapter:

'There are driver or hardware problems with the network adapter "Realtek RTL 8187 Wireless 802.11b/g 54Mbps USB 2.0 Network Adapter" on this computer' and follows to say that it is experiencing driver or hardware related issues. When I go to the Device Manager, I am told:

"Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

But when I try to update the driver, I am told the most up to date software is installed. So why has it stopped working? Is this now a hardware problem?

    Hi,

    ·        Did you make any changes to the system?

Error Code 39: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

    Cause:

There are several causes of Code 39 errors:

§ A required device driver is missing.

§ A required binary file is corrupted.

§ There is a problem with the file I/O process.

§ A driver that is referencing an entry point in another binary file is unable to load

    Method 1:

I would suggest you to uninstall the drivers from Device manager and again download it from the manufacturer’s website and reinstall it again on the system again. Check the links mentioned below.

    http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/searchView.aspx?keyword=RTL8187

Note: before installing the driver on the system, I would suggest you to uninstall the driver that is already present on the system and then install.

For further reference, check the link mentioned below.

Update a driver for hardware that isn't working properly

    Method 2:

I would suggest you to delete the Upper and Lower filters for the Network adapter from the Registry and check. Follow the steps mentioned below.

    a.       Click on Start menu and type regedit in the start search box and press enter.

    b.      Navigate to the location mentioned below.

    HKEY_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    c.       If you find any upper and lower filters then, right click on entry and delete it.

    Thank you and Regards.

I just realized that I have posted in the wrong section, as I am using Vista, not Windows 7, but if you can help me, that would be great. I have a Gateway MX8738, which I bought three years ago. It had the hard drive replaced last year, but I've never had issues with the wireless adapter before.
