How to remove a Notepad file association

In my haste I neglected to uncheck the "Always use the program..." when opening a file with Notepad. I have removed the file type from "Folder Options/File Types" but the Notepad icon remains and Notepad is still listed as the Preferred Program. I can't seem to find a place to even change the icon. I guess it's not really a problem but I'm annoyed there's not a simple and obvious way to correct this mistake.

Or is there?

Did you try to change it by right clicking on a .txt file and selecting Properties and then clicking on the "Opens with"  Change button?

This is weird but I just checked that directory again and all the icons are now changed back to the normal "Unknown Application" design so I guess the problem has been solved somehow. The night this happened I did search around in all of the Windows settings panels and tried to disassociated that particular file type (.usr in this case) but the Notepad icon remained and I finally gave up and started this thread. In particular I never found any settings panels for Notepad that would let me change Notepad's file associations and I wasn't much interested in fooling around in the Registry so I thought I would wait for a reply to this thread before proceeding. I was never notified that a reply had been posted but just remembered to come here and check and that's when I found a reply had been posted. So it's been several weeks since I even checked the directory. Anyway, I'm not sure why but the problem seems to be solved.

Still I think Notepad should have some way to set associations from its options menu.

Yes, but I have only other (incorrect) programs as choices. If the list of choices contained a "none" option my problem would be solved.

    Thanks for the suggestion though.
