Category View is missing as an option in Control Panel

I am having a problem with switching to 'Category View' on control panel. There is no longer a pane on the left hand side with the option to toggle between Category and Classic view. It's just stuck on Classic View. Any ideas on how to switch if that simple toggle option is gone????

If you have accidentally closed the view pane on the left hand side of Control Panel (i.e., you can't see the 'Switch to category view' button), you can get it back:

Control Panel / Tools / Options / General - select 'Show common tasks in folders' and apply. Once you have the view pane back you can 'Switch to classic view' or 'category view' as you please

Sorry, I am out of ideas.

Wait for XP experts to come along.

I actually tried that as well, but I don't even have that registry key. I really can't fathom what the problem is.

Thanks for your help though! Maybe it's part of a bigger problem, for some reason my 'My Documents' won't open from the 'Start' menu either. I just noticed that. I can get to my documents any other way, but it won't open directly from the Start menu.

    Odd.

Have a look at this link :

    http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic135651.html

Scroll all the way to the end, read what itnewbee said. See if that make sense to you, as I don't use XP.

Warning : you will be working on registry fix. Do it at your own risk.

Hi, I tried that and it did not work. The 'Show common tasks in folders' option was already selected. I then deselected it, and tried to select it after switching to the other option. It still did not work.
