Reset Default File Open to "None"

I opened a file with Notepad and accidentally left the box checked for "Default".  How can I set the default file open back to "none" or "unknown"?  I tried opening the CMD window and entering

assoc .fileext=

(with the real extension in place of fileext) but that didn't do anything that I can see.  thanks.

You can do it in the registry if you are comfortable going there. If you do, back up the registry or at least the values you are deleting. You can find instructions on how to do this in Help and Support.

Click Run, type regedit and click OK. Go here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts scroll down to .txt, (this is Note Pad file extension) Expand .txt and click OpenWithList, On the right side is the list, right click and Delete the ones you do no want Note Pad to open.

I tried that procedure to change my .rofl file back to none but it isn't letting me delete the files :( it displays to me a box stating "Unable to delete all specified values."

Thank you.  Unfortunately, this only allows me to associate the file with another program.  I don't want to change to another default program, I want to have NO program associated with the file.

You can change it back to the real file extension here: Control Panel, Default Programs, Associate a file type or protocol with a program, find your file type and click Change Program (top right) if you do not see your program click on Other Programs. Or just right click your file and choose Open With and follow the same procedure. Pay attention to the check box.
