Handle is invalid when printing

I have an HP 5510.  Working fine on Windows xp machine.  I bought a new pc with windows 7.  HP's site has no driver it says to use the windows 7 driver.  I hooked the printer up to the pc that was connected to the internet.  Driver installed fine.  Tried to print from various sources and it will not.  The printer is listed and says it is online and operational.  I get various error but when I print from notepad I get the error the handle is invalid.  I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the printer.  There was a windows update for the printer, I installed that and still no luck.  I run the HP diags test and says everything passed and asks to print a test page.  I do but it wont print and do not get an error.  I suspect this is a windows issue and not a driver issue.  Any ideas?

OK, I fixed it after lots of digging around the internet.  I booted to safemode and renamed the folder called 3 in the system32 directory.  I booted back to normal mode and then removed the printer from the device manager.  Then I let windows reinstall it.  After this I am now able to print.

What are we to rename the '3' folder to? Anything in particular?

I have same problems with you, I can't find any folder named 3.

But Bufbandit's solution makes me to uninstall the printer driver that I manually installed > restart > open windows update (printer's on & connected to the computer) > check updates > update the driver from windows update

    hope this will help :)

    Hi Bufbandit,

You can try disabling your security software temporarily to see if it you're able to print a test page.
