System Restore - Undo Restore

Anonymous
2011-01-13T15:16:17+00:00

Yesterday, I did a System Restore because I had lost some files and thought that would recover them.  Instead, it caused the computer to freeze up.  When I turned off the system and then rebooted, I had lost many different components of different applications.  THey are installed on my computer, but cannot run.  I try to uninstall them and I can't do that either.  When I try to Undo the Restore, it processes it and then tell me it can't undo the Restore.

I really don't know what to do and hope someone can offer some help.  The programs affected were Adobe Reader (any version), AVG Free and I'm not sure what else - but those two are important to me.

fortunately, those two programs can be sacrificed for the time being, since they are free and can be re-installed again.

the problem with losing some files may be the result of becoming un-indexed by the master file table.

if you have an xp cd available, then I would suggest to run a check disk command via the recovery console feature.

the ( chkdsk /r ) command will scan the hard disk for any bad sectors, mark them as unusable and then reconcile file system to the master file table.

there is a caveat however.  if you created any new files or installed new software while the file system was corrupted, it is possible that they won’t be re-indexed.

Don't have, and never did have Norton - unless it was hidden in something else.  But thanks for thinking of me.  I'm just glad things seem to be working well now.  Thanks.

I'll bet I know what happened. It sure sounds like a case of Norton's obnoxious "tamper protection."

If I am right (that is, if you do have Norton or at one point did have Norton), this page should help you:

I tried doing the restore in the Safe Mode with Command Prompt but it didn't work.  It went through the restore process the same as always, and then after it restarted, it said cannot be restored to the date selected.  I chose a date 4 days earlier than today to make sure it didn't get involved in any of the restore from yesterday.  I just don't know what to do.  The earlier post said that if I had the XP disc I could run a repair, but I don't have the disc - just a COA.

Thanks for your help - I do appreciate it.

The solution to your System Restore issue should be an easy one. Try once more to undo the System Restore, but this time, do so in Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with command prompt if necessary):

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304449

As you have probably learned System Restore will not recover deleted data. This is why regular backups are always recommended.

There is "undelete" software available, but the more you use your hard drive, the more difficult it will be to retrieve it, and it's likely there will still be some files that are not retrievable. If the files are that important, you should stop messing with your PC and either remove the hard drive (and slave it to another PC or place it in an external USB enclosure... then again, you will need another PC!) to prevent more data loss or boot up with a live Linux CD or something like Bart PE or UBCD4Win. You would need an external hard drive, too.
