I did not realize 64 bit was going to give me a headache.  I did not do my homework.  What do I need to do to join the rest of the world in watching Youtube, etc?  Is Adobe on the verge of a Player which will work with 64 bit?

Windows 7 64 bit includes Internet Explorer 8 32 bit so you can view Flash content on the web.

Please note, if you using a 64 bit version of Windows 7, you need to use the 32 bit version of Internet Explorer 8 that is included with the operating system. Adobe Flash Player does not support 64 bit version of Internet Explorer in Windows 7 at this time.

Click Start > All Programs > Click Internet Explorer (the one that is not listed as 64 bit)

Adobe Flash Player is not supported for playback in a 64-bit browser

I have Windows 7 64-bit and need to use Internet Explorer 32-bit

The 64 bit version of Adobe Flash 11 is now available.

The 64 bit installer contains both 32 and 64 bit versions.

Is Adobe on the verge of a Player which will work with 64 bit?

Yes, they currently have a 64bit version of Flash in development. You can install it and use the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer, but it's beta software, not final release. Get the 64 bit version of Flash here:

If you don't want to use a beta version, you can just use the 32 version of IE and get flash here:
