An automated troubleshooter is available that can diagnoses problems that can prevent installing and uninstalling programs on your Windows-based computer. This troubleshooter can help with programs that do not uninstall correctly and with issues where programs may be blocking the installations of other programs. To run the troubleshooter, click Run Now on the following website:

    Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter

Note: The Windows Installer Cleanup utility (MSICUU2.exe) that was previously referred to in this article has been retired. The Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is a replacement for that utility.

If you need to uninstall Office version 2003, 2007, or 2010, a new FixIT solution is available in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007, or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?

If you need to uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials, see the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

How to manually uninstall Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0.1963 if you cannot uninstall it by using the Add or Remove Programs item

    Hope this helps

    Bobby

    Fdsablehlol;

The windows installer cleanup utility is not just for office. I was developed to be able to remove/uninstall a program that did not install properly and is giving you problems.

When you install it and run it it will list the programs installed on your system. if Silverlight is the only problem then check it and then remove it. Then you can reinstall Silverlight.

Thanks, Ramesh, for directing me to the text right under my nose, that I did not read.

Of course, WICU came in handy in other situations than just Office...

Personally, I would have preferred the article to stay the same with a more prominent message about the retirement of the cleanup util, and a link to a NEW KB article about "How do I uninstall Office...".

Then there's all those dead links in the KB articles and elsewhere that link directly to msicuu2.exe, that just take a visitor to a dead page now with no explanation...

    From KB290301

While the Windows Installer Cleanup utility resolved some installation problems, it sometimes damaged other components installed on the computer. Because of this, the tool has been removed from the Microsoft Download Center. The Fix it Solutions in this article provide the ability to fully remove Office 2003, 2007 and 2010 suites without damaging other Windows components.

Looks like MSKB 290301  "Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility" got some attention yesterday - the title is now "How do I uninstall Office 2003, Office 2007 or Office 2010 suites if I cannot uninstall it from Control Panel?" (Article ID: 290301 - Last Review: June 29, 2010 - Revision: 12.0)

Download links for the utility in the MSDL center (http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2.exe , found on a variety of other MS KB documents) are no longer working.

Not sure what's going on but it seems like for the time being at least, this utility has been yanked.
