This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

I recently had a major problem with my laptop (HP Pavillion dv7-1245dx) where the hard drive completely failed on me. I've replaced the hard drive, loaded it with Windows Vista Ultimate 64-bit, and downloaded and installed all the drivers I could find on HP's service site... yet, I'm still having a problem with my ethernet controller.

My ethernet controller comes up with this message in the device manager:

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

I've installed the drivers I've gotten several times over, and even tried uninstalling and installing again, but to no avail. I (obviously) can't get online with that computer to have windows check for a problem. I'm at my wit's end on what to do.

Any help would be appreciated.

In Device Manager double click on the Ethernet to see it's Properties, click on the Driver tab, click on "Driver details" button. On the "Driver File Details", under "Driver files" do the files show with green check marks?

    Try these:

    1. In the Device Manager, highlight the device and press the Delete key. When prompted, confirm that you wish to uninstall the device. Do not restart the PC.
    2. In the Device Manager, click the Scan for hardware changes button (near the top). Windows will now scan your system for hardware and install default drivers for anything that requires drivers at this time.
    3. If the error is still present repeat item no. 1. In Action menu, click"Add legacy hardware" -> click the "Next" button -> on the "Add Hardware" box tick on "Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced) -> click the "Next" button. Under "Common hardware types:" choose "Network adapters" -> click the "Next" button. Under manufacturer choose HP -> choose your Network adaptor from the list. If reinstalling the default drivers by using the Device Manager does not correct the problem, you may need to reinstall the original and updated software drivers from the HP web site, then click on the "Have disk" button instead and browse to the driver you downloaded. Follow the remaining prompts, you may need to reboot.

Try this if you haven't done so:

    1.  Delete the Ethernet Controller under "Other devices". Select it, then press the delete key on the keyboard. Don't restart.

    2.  Select your ethernet under "Network adapters", right click "Update Driver software...", then browse to the location of your downloaded driver. Be sure you downloaded the latest driver for windows vista 64 bit.

    3.  You may have to reboot.

When I click 'driver details' it's telling me there aren't even any drivers installed.

The funny part is, there's a section listed under 'network adapters' in the device manager that's listed as "Realtek RTL8102E Family PCI-E Fast Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0), and it says it's working correctly, but under 'Other Devices' is my Ethernet Controller problem.

Yet, despite this, I still can't connect to the internet.

Following any of your other steps seems to just bring me right back here... a relatively unlabeled, useless 'Ethernet Controller' with supposedly no drivers installed.

    Thoughts?
