Thank you! I was having the same problem; this really helped. =)
how do i import vob files in windows movie maker?
Windows Movie Maker and .vob files
I have a Sony Handycam video camera that saves to little mini DVD discs in the .vob file format. I have a Windows 7 64 bit computer using Windows Movie Maker.
Like a good little question asker, I searched this forum and google'd before writing this question and I'm still confused. According to what I read, this version of Windows Movie Maker SHOULD import .vob files unlike previous earlier versions. The problem is that when I import, there is no sound and a 870MB file only shows 3 or 4 seconds of video. Obviously something's up.
Previous MVP's have told posters in the past a couple of things. One, to download a ripper and change the format of the video. Since this version of MM supposedly accepts .vob files, I want to avoid that and I don't think I should have to do that unlike Vista users, for example. Besides, every time I change video file formats with a ripper, I risk "losing something" in the tranfer.
Other MVP's have said to rename the .vob file to something else (.mpg or .avi). I can't figure out how to just rename a file to make it a .mpg file and then import it. How do I do that, specifically?
Further, am I missing something? If the Windows 7 version of MM says it will work with .vob files, and I have .vob files, am I doing something stupid? It should be just drag and drop into MM or import, no?
Thanks!

Try renaming the VOB file to MPG and see if it will work.
Copy the VOB file to a folder on your hard drive.
Right click the VOB file and from the menu...choose Rename...
All you have to change is the extension from .VOB to .MPG...
then press Enter. Now try to import the MPG file.
Example: VTS_02_1.VOB to VTS_02_1.MPG
I realize you're a volunteer so I appreciate your time.
I'm not trying to be thick, but when I right click on a file, and select "rename," it only allows me to change the name of the file, not the extension. I mean, I could (and did) hit rename and type in VTS_02_1.MPG, but now it's just a file named, "VTS_02_1.MPG" that is still a .VOB file. When I put that file into Movie Maker, I still get 10 seconds of video out that should be 5 minutes long or so.
Thanks for the encoding software but I just don't have the will or desire to convert files from one type to another when the original should work. I don't know if it's my file(s) or MM, but I'll probably just look for a different piece of software that works.
If anyone has any other ideas, thanks, I'll try them out if you post. To the two posters above, thanks for your time!

Not sure why you say the file is still a VOB file because in actuality
VOB files are MPEG files. Sadly...all versions of Movie Maker seem
to have issues with MPEG files. Even if importing and editing goes
well...there can be issues when rendering to DVD. Some files on
some systems work and some do not.
If you are saying you cannot see the Extensions of the files...
you can go to Folder Options and make them visible. Uncheck...
"Hide extensions for known file types"...
See the following article.

Good luck with your project.

2010-12-13T02:22:35+00:00 It should work.
In the mean while you may check it with the following tool.
Format Factory

He-he......yeah, it should work! :)
Thanks for that link. I want to avoid having to re-encode a file format that is supposed to be compatible in the first place. Just adds another layer of complexity that should be unnecessary and can introduce video/audio imperfections. I was hoping there was a solution that allowed me to use the .vob files that I have, as is.
Thanks.

If you still have problems with the file...you will have to
convert it to the .WMV format. The freeware Format Factory
(previously suggested by S.Sengupta) may be worth a try:
(FWIW...it's always a good idea to create a System
Restore point before installing software or updates)
Format Factory
(the file you want to download is : >FFSetup260.zip<
(FWIW...when installing...you may want to
uncheck 'all' the boxes on the final screen)
First you will need to unzip the file or just open the
folder and drag FFSetup260.exe out of the folder
and drop it on your desktop. Left click it to install.
First...after downloading and installing Format
Factory...you may want to open the program and
left click the 'Option' button on the toolbar and
select an 'Output Folder' / Apply / OK.
(this is where you will find your files after they
are converted)
Drag/drop your video clips onto the main screen...
Select 'All to WMV' / OK...
Click...Start...on the toolbar...
That should do it...
Good luck...
