I sure wish I could ask a tech, but I'm not rich.

I posted a question earlier, but no response. This old used computer has a corrupted backup os cd, and norton antivirus ATE my win xp sp3. Can't even safe mode it now, never mind system restore! Anybody know anything???

Hi ta2jac,

After checking the Technical Specifications of your computer model, we found that your computer qualifies to install Windows 7. However we strongly recommend you to run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.

See Dell Dimension 3000 System Technical Specifications

If you've restored the computer and if you're able to boot the computer to the desktop, then we recommend you to download and run Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to check if your computer qualify to install Windows 7.

See Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor

If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes:

• 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor

• 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit)

• 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)

• DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

See Windows 7 system requirements

Sure, Start the computer and when the Dell logo comes on click and hold control, the hold down F11. When you see the screen has a blue line across the top-of-screen just release both at the same time. A new menu will open up. click the arrow down to CD/DVD and click Enter. You can then use a new disk in the c drive or make the computer try and repair itself. It takes a few tries, but it will work. You have got to have a disk in the drive for it to open with.

You have 2 options really base on your listed situation:

1 - You can do what Syed stated and check you model number on your PC manufacturers website.  Easiest way to see if they approve it for Windows 7 is to see if they list Windows 7 drivers to download for your model.  You may also consider printing out the specification listings and taking it buy a local retail computer store like Best Buy to just ask a tech.  No charge for that.

2 - You can also contact Dell about getting a new set of Recover Discs for your model.  It may not be Windows 7, but at least it would get the system running again.

    Hi ta2,

trashed does not provide enough information for anybody to help you...sounds out of your depth... trying to give you instructions over the internet (written) may just lead to further confusion.

You should (I suggest) take it to a local computer repair shop... cost... probably less than $50... also ask them to scan your 2nd hand computer for Root Kit infections...they will do a virus scan... but specificly ask for a root kit infection scan as well.

    Regards.
