Is there any Microsoft software to monitor S.M.A.R.T. hard disk stats for notifying user?  I've never seen any, but maybe something exists already.

For doing this type of thing I've used a Fedora Linux boot disc.  I think it would be extremely valuable for an important Windows Update to include similiar functionality that can popup a notification if it can be determined that a HDD is likely failing.  Maybe more specialized software can do a thorough analysis, but just going off the open standards some kind of notification should be able to be shown.

Thanks for the reply, but that link / sysinternals app don't seem to work at all with S.M.A.R.T. counters.

For the wikipedia page regarding the technology, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S.M.A.R.T.

It's actually an extremely critical post.  The hard drives are out there often able to say "Hey, I'm dieing" and all versions of Windows seem to not listen for it to do anything.  It's possible and seems right for MS to offer a Windows Update to at least listen for that and then in response show a HDD likely dieing alert.

    Hi Tom213,

Event viewer will log events by SMART but generally the monitoring software would be by the disk manufacturer.
