Cable modem won't connect to internet (Windows 7 - new computer)

I am currently using a cable modem/ethernet cable to connect to the internet.  I recently purchased a new desktop PC (e machines model ET1831-07) with Windows 7.  Plugged the ethernet cable in, but can't connect to the internet.  Cable modem/ethernet cable both work fine on my laptop (the one on which I'm currently typing.)  Tried troubleshooting, but Windows can't seem to figure out the problem.

Also, when I try to connect to the internet through the network and internet window, it says I require a username and password from my ISP to connect.  Since I use a cable modem, I don't have a username or password (and I called and verified this with my ISP.)

Help!!

So I had this same problem and this is how I fixed it

    1. Press Windowskey+R
    2. Type NCPA.CPL and hit enter
    3. Right click LAN and click diagnose (windows will search for problems)
    4. Windows found it needed to enable DCHP for lan
    5. Click Fix as administrator
    6. Windows fixed it and I was immediately connected to the internet

I have no idea what DCHP is or where to make that fix manually, but that was the problem. Good luck!

To remove the Broadband (PPPoE) connection:

    1. Press WindowsKey+R , type ncpa.cpl in the box, and click OK .
    2. Right-click the connection.
    3. Click Delete .

How do I remove a Broadband (PPPoE) connection?  That's exactly what happens when I try to connect - it wants me to go through that and enter a username and password.

I don't have the desktop in front of me right now, but SOMEWHERE there's a "connect to the internet" tab.  =)

I did try resetting the cable modem with no success.  And again, it works fine on my laptop (laptop is running XP, FWIW.)

I used Control Panel >> Network and Internet Window >> Connect to the internet.  The Network and Internet Window brings seems to be the Windows 7 version of "My Network Places" on XP.

Reset the cable modem by disconnecting it from the AC power for a few seconds, then re-connecting it.  If that isn't possible, look for a Reset button on the cable modem.  Then try accessing the Internet again.

I'm not sure what you mean by "connect to the internet through the network and internet window".  What exactly are you clicking to get to it?
