Keyboard and Mouse do not work after the computer leaves BIOS and starts loading Windows XP

The problem is when I leave BIOS and Windows starts loading I lose the keyboard and mouse functions. Since there are two accounts set up, I need to click on one of them to open windows, which I can't because the mouse doesn't work. What can I do to get into Windows or to fix this problem?

I have the same issue now - after shutting down and disconnecting the PC and unplugging everything - and using a different USB mouse and keyboard - the USB ports will not function on the PC at all after Windows XP log-in screen loads.  All is fine in the BIOS but USB ports appear to shutdown soon as Win XP first screen loads. No hardware problems exist -   Can't access safemode either as keyboard and mouse won't function - and there are no other PS-2 type ports on the Dell Dimension system...  Grr!

Kinda stumped at the moment... any suggestions anyone???

    Hello Dann Dollaz,

    1.     Was the keyboard and mouse working fine ever before on your computer?

    2.     Did you make any changes to the computer before it stopped working?

I suggest that you boot you computer to ‘Safe Mode’ and check if the keyboard and mouse is working.

Follow the below steps to boot the computer to ‘Safe Mode’:

    a.     Restart your computer if it is powered on.

    b.     Tap the F8 key after your computer initially powers on.

    c.      Once you see the Advanced Boot Options menu you can stop tapping.

    d.     Use the up/down arrow keys to highlight your selection.

    e.     Select Safe Mode and press Enter.

    f.       Logon to your computer using an account with Administrator privileges.

If it works fine in ‘Safe Mode’ I suggest that you set your computer to clean boot as this issue can be caused by some of the Third Party services.

    a.     Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    b.     If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.

    c.       On the General tab, click Selective Startup.

    d.      Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.

    e.     Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.

    f.        Click OK.

    g.      When you are prompted, click Restart.

After the computer starts, check if the issue is fixed, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

You can also set the computer to normal startup once you determine the service causing the issue. See the section on how return your computer to a Normal startup mode by following the steps under “Reset the computer to start as usual” in the above article.

i had the same problem using microsoft usb keyboard, after bios it was turning off, couldnt select boot from cd or safe mode etc.

went into bios and found in the peripheral port controller it had

    basic keyboard - enabled

    basic mouse - enable

    usb keyboard - disabled

    usb mouse - disabled

changed them to enabled, saved and exited. and now it works fine. not sure where it might be in your dell bios, but if you can find something similar it might help.

Thank You for your response. Unfortunately this didn't help. Even in safe mode, when I got to the Administrator screen I still could not use the mouse to click on the account. This computer is not mine it was given to me to fix and I could have it if I could get it running. I am just trying to see if it is a windows problem or a computer problem and if it is worth fixing or getting a new one. I did try to use the restore disc, but as soon as it was done loading I got a Blue Screen with the error STOP:0x0000008E (0xC0000005,0x8081C09C,0xF73DA798,0x00000000).
