How do I change to a high speed USB port?

Anonymous

Twice recently when I connected my new Sony audio recorder to my PC via the USB cable, a box has popped up that says something like: "This is a hi-speed USB device. For faster performance, connect it to one of these available hi-speed USB ports. Then it shows a diagram. I though right-clicking on one of the other port symbols might give me a dialog box telling how to switch over. No such luck. Did a lot of other poking around and still can't figure out where XP lets me change to the higher speed USB ports. Help?

So far we have you that have been getting a message "something like" and "the message" :)

I posted up what the usual message indicating a driver update is needed - is this the message you see?

    This device can perform faster

This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port.

For a list of available ports, click here.

If you have the msinfo32 information, you can identify the motherboard, BIOS, etc. and then usually find the manual for the motherboard, so I believe the documenation for your Intel D865GBF is here:

    http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/highlights/dsktpboards/d865gbf

    It says:

The boards support up to eight USB 2.0 ports, supports UHCI and EHCI, and uses UHCI- and EHCI-compatible drivers.

The ICH5 provides the USB controller for all ports. The port arrangement is as follows:

    • Two ports are implemented with stacked back panel connectors, adjacent to the PS/2 connectors

    • Two ports are implemented with stacked back panel connectors, adjacent to the audio connectors

    • Four ports are routed to two separate front panel USB connectors

Looks like there are some updates to consider and a driver update utility to let you check your system for updates (It will not run on my system).

Maybe one of the more hardware oriented folks can help you decide if you need that listed update that has the word USB in the description.

You would have to look in Device Manager at your USB driver version and see if that one listed on the Intel page is appropriate for your system.

Do, or do not. There is no try.

Maybe someday the XP forums "Ask a question " dialog will ask these questions automatically when a new thread is started so I do not have to ask them every single time.  It might even be possible to resolve an issue in a single reply when enough information is provided.

Please provide additional information about your system:

What is your system make and model?

What is your XP Version and Service Pack?

If you mean you are seeing this:

    This device can perform faster

This USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port.

For a list of available ports, click here.

It is an informational message and not an error message.

Open Device Manager, by clicking Start, Run and in the box enter:

    %SystemRoot%\system32\devmgmt.msc

    Click OK.

Do you see any red Xs or yellow ?s in the list of devices and if so, in what sections?

Now expand the Universal Serial Bus controllers section and look for the words:

    Enhanced Host Controller

Here is an example screen shot of what to look for in your Device Manager:

    http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/2466/devicemanagerenhanced.png

On your system, do you see the word Enhanced in any sections under the Universal Serial Bus controllers section?

If you would like another set of eyeballs on your system information, do this:

Click Start, Run and in the box enter:

    msinfo32

Click OK, and when the System Summary info appears, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then paste the information back here.

For USB port information, expand the Components section, click USB, click Edit, Select All, Copy and then past he information back here.

There will be some personal information (like System Name and User Name), and whatever appears to be private information to you, just delete it from the pasted information.

Yes, I'm plugging the USB cable directly into the computer, and it is the cable that came with the Sony recorder. I do have an enhanced port, as shown below..

You can't change USB ports using software.  They are what they are.  If your computer has both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0, you have to figure out which physical ports are connected to the Enhanced controller.

If you have a desktop/tower with both USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 ports, the USB 2.0 ports probably are the ones in the front of the case rather than on the back.

What make and model computer do you have?

Messages of this sort in recent years have meant you are connecting a USB 2 device to a USB 1 port. However, you can now buy USB 3 devices so we need to establish what it is you have?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus

How old is the computer? What make and model? What version of windows?

    What is the Sony model?

Are you connecting the the Sony Audio recorder into a USB of the computer or into a USB hub which then connects to a USB port of the computer?  Some devices need direct connections to  a port on the computer.

Are you using the cable which came with the Audio recorder or a cable merely bought at the same time as you bought the Audio recorder? Cables can be USB 1 or USB 2 capable. You can tell which you have by looking at the connectors on each end of the cable.

    Something else to look at:

    http://www.usbman.com/Guides/checking_for_usb_2.htm

    What do you find?

    Hope this helps, Gerry Cornell
