Is it indexing things you do not need to be indexed?

I am using Windows 7.  I am using the indexing capability from the control panel.  I am only indexing MS Outlook.  At 0915 this morning 6301 files were indexed.  It is now 1345 (4 1/2 hrs later) and only 6650 files have been indexed.  When I try to search in MS outlook I get a report that there are 25,404 files left to index.  At this rate (78 files an hour), it will be 326 hours or 14 days before indexing is done of just the outlook file.

I tried troubleshooting and nothing was reported.

When I first loaded Windows 7 over Thanksgiving, indexing was completed rapidly.

    Hi bobatkc,

    a.  Which version of Operating system are you using?

    b.  Are you trying to use the indexing search of webpage or is it the Windows Explorer?

In the meanwhile you may try these steps to increase the index search speed for the Windows Explorer:

    Method 1: Try a troubleshooter

Windows includes two troubleshooting programs that you can use to automatically fix some common problems with your computer's performance or with maintenance of your system.

    ·  Open the Performance troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Check for performance issues.

    ·  Open the Maintenance troubleshooter by clicking the Start button , and then clicking Control Panel. In the search box, type troubleshooter, and then click Troubleshooting. Under System and Security, click Run maintenance tasks.

Method 2: Restart the computer by using a clean startup

When you start Microsoft Windows, typically there are several programs that start automatically and run in the background that may interfere with the game. These programs may include antivirus and system utility programs. When you perform a clean startup, you prevent these programs from starting automatically.

You must be logged on as an administrator or a member of the Administrators group to complete this procedure. If your computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent you from completing this procedure.

    1.  Click Start, type System Configuration in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.  If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue .

    2.  Click the General tab, and then click Selective Startup .

    3.  Click to clear the Load system services check box and the Load startup items check box.

    4.  Click to select the Load system services check box.

    5.  Click OK , and then click Restart .

After you perform a clean startup, empty the temp folder in Windows.

Note: The temporary folder is located in each specific user folder--for example, C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Local\Temp. To empty the Windows temporary folder, follow these steps:

    1.  Click Start, type %temp% in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    2.  On the Edit menu, click Select All .

    3.  On the File menu, click Delete .

    4.  Click Yes.

After you perform a clean startup, empty the prefetch folder in Windows.

Note The temporary folder is located in each specific user folder--for example, C:\Users\ user name \AppData\Local\Temp. To empty the Windows temporary folder, follow these steps:

    1.  Click Start, type prefetch in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.

    2.  On the Edit menu, click Select All .

    3.  On the File menu, click Delete .

    4.  Click Yes .

Also uninstall certain unwanted programs and tool bars from start - control panel - Programs and Features.
