    this problem is easy to solve if it was from the Registry

    Step 1:

    Type the Following Script in Notepad and save it as anything.reg

    Script is:

    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR]

    "Type"=dword:00000001

    "Start"=dword:00000003

    "ErrorControl"=dword:00000001

    "ImagePath"=hex(2):73,00,79,00,73,00,74,00,65,00,6d,00,33,00,32,00,5c,00,44,00,\

      52,00,49,00,56,00,45,00,52,00,53,00,5c,00,55,00,53,00,42,00,53,00,54,00,4f,\

      00,52,00,2e,00,53,00,59,00,53,00,00,00

    "DisplayName"="USB Mass Storage Driver"

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR\Security]

    "Security"=hex:01,00,14,80,90,00,00,00,9c,00,00,00,14,00,00,00,30,00,00,00,02,\

      00,1c,00,01,00,00,00,02,80,14,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,01,00,00,\

      00,00,02,00,60,00,04,00,00,00,00,00,14,00,fd,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,\

      05,12,00,00,00,00,00,18,00,ff,01,0f,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,\

      20,02,00,00,00,00,14,00,8d,01,02,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,0b,00,00,00,00,\

      00,18,00,fd,01,02,00,01,02,00,00,00,00,00,05,20,00,00,00,23,02,00,00,01,01,\

      00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,00,01,01,00,00,00,00,00,05,12,00,00,00

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR\Enum]

    "0"="USB\Vid_090c&Pid_1000\3410050000326299"

    "Count"=dword:00000001

    "NextInstance"=dword:00000001

    I followed the instructions and got an error in Windows 7 that stated that I could only import binary registry files from within the registry editor. So guess Ill try it the old fashioned way unless you have a different approach?

    Charles,

    I just googled for answers to solve my own USB code 45 problem and came across your registry script. I ran it but the problem for me still persists. My problem with my USB port followed an overcurrent warning from plugging in an external HDD into that same port. The HDD had it's own power-supply. Before I could pull the USB plug from the HDD out of the port, the laptop turned off. I assumed this occurred from the overcurrent problem shorting out a circuit, or it triggered a fault protection circuit that cut the power. Now when I plug in even a simple USB thumb drive, I get a code 45 on it, and the led light in the thumb drive oscillates on and off every second, or so, synchronized with the windows sound for the USB engaging and disengaging.

    My notebook is a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ791N running XP SP3. The adjacent USB port is fine. Having read other suggestions, I completely removed all the USB drivers under the Device Manager and allowed Windows to reinstall them, but that did not correct the problem. I read where USB ports were protected from an overcurrent conditions with PTC devices and that these devices are resettable. If this is related to the port now acting up, I have not found out how to reset the PTC device. Beyond that theory, any idea what to do to get the port back up and operational?

    Thank you.
