Hi,

Are you running MSE or other antivirus/security programs that stop Windows Defender from running?

If so then Windows Defender is blocked from running by them. McAfee, AVG, and many others do this.

MSE includes Windows Defender's functions in it so that running it separately would be redundant.

Troubleshooting Windows Defender

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555957

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MsAsCui.exe" is the default Defender folder

Start - type in Search box -> Windows Defender - find at top of list - Right Click on it - RUN AS ADMIN

If no joy use Start - Computer or Windows Explorer to navigate to that folder and create a Shortcut to put

on Desktop and Start Menu. You can also Right Click any exist shortcuts and see if they point to there.

Target

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender\MsAsCui.exe"

Start In

"%ProgramFiles%\Windows Defender"

Maybe something here if needed :

What is showing/causing the error message? Some security/anitvirus/antispyware products can

cause this error. Which of those do you use INCLUDING any that your ever had even those

uninstalled (the remnants can cause issues). McAfee is just an example of what many can do.

Start - type in Search box - Services - find at top of list - Right Click - Run as Admin

Windows Defender - set to STARTED and AUTOMATIC

or set to STOPPED and MANUAL    if needed

Scratch that; you can't have windows defender on with mse on your comp. You don't need it.

This seemed to work for everyone in another forum:

Solve the problem, Just Go to the windows Defender Folder Should Be C:\Program Data\Microsoft . Then open up the properties menu and click advanced, strip the inherited permission, and it should reset. Or you can remove all users, and have the permission from the parent object, expressed to the Folder, and subfolders. Work for me, and I have tried everything else.

I can't find "then open up the properties menu and click advanced". This, after I unhid the hidden folders start>control panel>appearance and personalization>folderoptioins>view> check "show hidden files, folders, and drives.

Can't find that folder he said to open up :-\
