device manager cannot detect a driver for lifecam vx-1000 model 1080

My friend has a MS LifeCam VX-1000 USB (model 1080)  which was working up until I recently upgraded his internal RAM.  Within Device Manager the device is now showing as a USB Camera with a yellow Question Mark against it. When I right-click and try installing the driver from a specific location - he now longer has the disk or has mislaid it, and I have downloaded the latest version of the software from the Microsoft website - DM cannot find/locate any driver software.  I have tried different locations including c:\windows\system32\drivers and c:\program files\microsoft lifecam\drivers32, with no success.  His OS is XP SP3 and the LifeCam is definately working as I have successfully installed it on my own Vista laptop.

Can anyone advise where the driver software resides for this webcam please?  Or, if there is a known problem can anyone provide a solution please?  Thanks for your assistance.

    Hi BRIANBCB,

    ·          What is the status of the LifeCam in the device manager and error code related?

I would suggest that you uninstall LifeCam from the computer using the device manager and restart the computer, let windows automatically install the drivers.

How to Troubleshoot Hardware Problems with Device Manager

If the above step fails then obtain the latest driver software for the LifeCam from the Microsoft website, install it and check if it works.

The new version of the lifecam driver is missing the 1080 model. And you can't install the older driver that had this model because it's a web installer.

Thanks Halima and I have followed your advice but still have the same problems i.e DM shows a yellow question mark against the item, error code 28 and previously error code 1.

What I have noticed is that the webcam is listed in the category of "Other Devices" and showing as a "USB Camera". In DM there is no entry under "Imaging Devices" or "Sound Video and game controllers". Is that significant?

    After downloading the latest software from the link provided for Webcam s/w, and letting the Hardware Update Wizard automatically install the drivers, the error message is;

"The hardware has not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software."

When I then try specific locations as mentioned in the article 929087, I get the same error message as above.

DM just does not seem to be able to locate the drivers.

One of the locations mentioned c:\Windows\Inf is not even listed in the \Windows tree structure, on his C:\ drive

Also the location c:\Program Files\Microsoft LifeCam\Driver32 cannot be selected unless you qualify this with \VX1000, and even then I am getting the same error message as above.

I would like to think that there is really something very basic that I am missing here, but now believe that perhaps there is a problem with the software download?

My friends PC is at the latest Service Pack 3 for XP and I also downloaded .Net framework at v4, before I did the software download. So I am pretty sure that I have done everything correctly.

Is the community able to offer any other suggestions?

I appreciate your time and input to my problem. Thanks
