Trouble with an old Synaptics touchpad

Hi all.

I am running Windows xp on an old Fujitsu C-series lifebook. The PC has a built-in Synaptics touchpad.

I need to upgrade the touchpad driver (I'm in trouble with IE8). The newest driver from Synaptics does not work perfectly, so I am looking for an older version compatible with my touchpad.

On Windows Update I find many old drivers; there's a list of compatible touchpads, referred to as "syn010f", "syn0121", ... I don't know how to find which is the "syn" identifier for my touchpad. On my PC, the System Information window yields, as a PNP ID for the touchpad, the value "ACPI\PNP0F13\4&3A74B4E7&0". Is there a corrispondence to a "syn" identifier?

Thanks in advance,

Enrico

    Dear Umesh,

    thanks for the reply.

In the first place, the old Synaptics touchpad driver which was installed on my PC, and which can be found from the Fujitsu website, is version 6.2.13 (year 2002). With this driver, I cannot scroll on webpages in Internet Explorer 8 (I mean, I cannot use the scrolling feature of the touchpad, either by drifting a finger on the right - or bottom - side of the touchpad, either by pressing the scrolling buttons). Scrolling works on other applications.

I tried the generic driver from the Synaptics website. This is version 15.2.7 (this year or so). With this driver, I can scroll. Yet, I find another problem: when performing a cold boot, everything is ok; on the other hand, if I restart the system (with the green button from the turn-off dialog) the touchpad will not work (it is completely disabled: the pointer is frozen). I have noticed that the system does not detect any pointing device (I think I have looked at the mouse properties from the Control Panel

    • I do not remember exactly). From System Information, the device is in error state. From the Microsoft Management Console, I have had a look at system events. I have found that at every restart the following event occurs: (sorry, I run the Italian version for Win XP)

    Tipo evento: Avviso

    Origine evento: i8042prt

    Categoria evento: Nessuno

    ID evento: 18

    Data:  21/05/2011

    Ora:  21.37.40

    Computer: PC-ENRICO

    Descrizione:

La periferica ha inviato una o più risposte scorrette dopo un ripristino del mouse.

Per ulteriori informazioni, consultare la Guida in linea e supporto tecnico all'indirizzo http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

    Dati:

    0000: 00 00 10 00 01 00 6a 00   ......j.

    0008: 00 00 00 00 12 00 05 80   .......€

    0030: 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00   ........

Now, if I uninstall the drivers, turn off the PC, and then reboot, Windows detects the touchpad and I can move the pointer (both on cold boot and on restart). But, all special features (such as scrolling) do not work.

I have begun suspecting my touchpad to be too old for the newest driver. This is why I was looking for an older driver on Windows Update Catalog. The Catalog lists, for each driver, the touchpads it suits to; yet, devices are identified by "*syn" followed by a 4-figure hexadecimal number. I do not know the "syn" identifier for my touchpad. I know that:

    1. System Information identifies the touchpad as "PNP0F13";
    2. on the touchpad properties dialog, the touchpad is said to be version 5.9 (I think this is the firmware version);
    3. this morning I opened up the PC case and had a look directly at the touchpad board. I have found the following identifier:

    Synaptics 920-000281-01 Rev C

I will read over the articles you have quoted and see whether they help.

    Thanks a lot,

    Enrico

EDIT: the first article you have quoted says that Fix-it is not available for Windows XP.

    Hi,

What exactly happens when you try to use Synaptics touchpad? Do you get any error message?

Step 1: Try running the Fix it tool from the below article and check.

Hardware devices are not working or are not detected in Windows

    http://support.microsoft.com/mats/hardware_device_problems/

Step 2: Uninstall the drivers from device manager and restart the computer. This should install proper drivers for it.

    1.     Open device manager.

    2.     Locate the device, right-click on it and select Uninstall.

    3.     Restart the computer.

Also refer this article, which can be used to roll back Driver.
