Restore messages from "WindowsMail.MSMessageStore"

My computer crashed. I restored the OS (Windows 7). I downloaded Windows Live Mail. The only backup I have of the old mail in Windows Live Mail is apparently in a file called "WindowsMail.MSMessageStore". I have that file. How can I import the mail data in that file for use in my newly downloaded Win Mail Live application?

Windows Mail is hidden in Windows 7 and is crippled so that the user application is invisible and cannot be used.  What you are seeing is the database for Windows Mail in Windows 7, which is the same as that as for Vista (cf. www.oehelp.com/backup.aspx#wm).  You won't find eml files there, as Windows Mail in Windows 7 is not used.

Windows Live Mail uses another database and eml files.  If you want help with that, you need to ask here:  www.windowslivehelp.com in the appropriate forum.  This forum is not for Windows Live Mail issues.

    I used Windows Live Mail

OK. Are you sure the big file you found isn't called Mail.MSMessageStore?

    > I will look for the .emi files

That would be .eml as in EML, short for 'e-mail'.

    a file called "WindowsMail.MSMessageStore".

That is not Windows Live Mail file. Did you have Vista installed on that machine previously?

How can I import the mail data in that file?

If that is an old Windows Mail database file, it contains no messages. It will contain only the headers of messages along with other information about them. You should be looking for files with an .eml extension - one per message. If you find them, you can drag them into a folder in WLMail.

Windows Live Mail has its own support forums at the Windows Live Solution Center. Please direct any further questions you may have to one of the forums on the right-hand side of this page.
