Faxing without a landline

How does one go about setting up a fax on a brand new HP Home Desktop OS Windows 7, without having a landline (home phone service)?

I need to be able to send and receive faxes and also make sure they are in the right format when I send or receive a fax.

Do I have to subscribe to a pay fax service, because I have heard of people being able to fax through the internet for free, but I am just not sure exactly what and how to set this up, and I do not know what (if any) software I may need.  Or if I need to purchase an external piece of hardware in order for this to actually work.

If someone out there could shed some light on this I will be extremely greatful.

Thank you,

MC Coleman

Consider using a program such as eFax.

    Hello,

You can try one of these internet fax providers, like Popfax. It's a paid service, but you won't have to worry about security and other system issues. Popfax has a web based platform that was created to simplify the process of sending and receiving faxes.
