    Hi lrl1of5,

    1)      Are you using Windows Backup and Restore?

    2)      Was it working fine before?

    3)      Do you recall making any changes?

Always quote the complete error message you receive.

Method 1: Run the fixit available in the links below and check if that makes any difference- Worth a try**Fix broken desktop shortcuts and common system maintenance tasks**

Note: Fixit would try to recover bad sectors on the hard disk, during this process there are chances of DATA loss from that particular sector.

Method 2:  Put the computer in clean boot and then try to backup

Follow Step 1 in the link below,

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

Important: - Remember to put the computer back to normal startup follow step 7 in the link.

Same problem happened to me on a brand new Dell Inspiron Laptop.

    - I installed Microsoft Essentials BEFORE doing my first Windows Update. The problem showed up browsing the internet using Internet Explorer. Many sites wouldn't load graphics. e.g.1) maps.google.com would show a completely blank page. e.g. 2) This site http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/Create-a-password-reset-disk  says "Watch this video to learn how to create a password reset disk (0:59)", but the video below was not displayed!

    • I fixed the problem by doing a System Restore to the point before the Microsoft Essentials installation. I then repeated the Windows Update (without installing Microsoft Essentials this time). Everything is good!

My conclusion (please someone correct me if I'm wrong!): Microsoft Essentials should have refused to download and install until I had run Windows Update. Several places on the internet discussing this problem say it happens when ".NET framework doesn't install properly". That first Windows Update on my new laptop included a LOT of .NET updates!
