Update:
I finally got around to unplugging the scanner, waiting 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in.
Problem solved.

A problem prevented the document from being scanned. Windows 7 - HP G4050 scanner.
I have an HP G4050 that worked fine with Vista. After upgrading to Windows 7, I get the following error when scanning:
A problem prevented the document from being scanned. Please try again, or for troubleshooting information, see Help and Support or the information that came with the scanner.
I get a different error when attempting a preview. It starts to preview the page, gets about 2 inches down the page and then I get the following error:
An error occurred when setting the scanner properties. If another program is scanning, please wait for to complete and try again.
I've downloaded the latest driver (and reinstalled it several times) from HP with no luck. No errors are logged in Application Events.
I'm going nuts trying to figure this one out! Thanks for your assistance.

I've got the same problem, but none of these solutions did work for me.
I tried everything with 2 diffrent scanners and they both came out with this same error. Any other solutions than previous ones?
-The scanner I'm trying to use now is a Canon MP550 -model. Driver is updated to the latest version.
-Scanner appears to be online&ready to use.
-The service Windows Image acquisition is started en running (automatic).
-Tried to run Windows Fax and Scan as administrator, but this also didn't had any effect.
This is very annoying, I can't scan anything.
Thank you very much!
Unplugging the scanner didn't work for me, but restarting Windows Image Acquisition AND running Windows Fax & Scan as an Admin worked. Thanks for the info.
I solved this problem by replacing usb cable with original HP usb cable,

Also try uninstalling and reinstalling the software.
Check the port if it is a networked printer.
